It's been a great week and a half.
Dennis, a first time hunter got a 6'4" black bear with a perfect hide, his brothers and uncle did well on halibut and other sea creatures.

Now I have a stupid question…are halibut like big flounders? Are they the same?

Good looking bear. The fish are definitely a bonus!

Nice-looking ling cod. Could you keep it?

Halibut and flounder are in the same family, I think.

1) halibut are a flat fish in the ssme family as flounder and sole, but they have a much better flavor and texture than either of the two.
2) the crazy looking creature is a wolf eel. They have a crushing bite, you don't want to get your fingers near their mouth.

Beat me to it waggler.

My question is this, being as they look like an eel are they tasty table fare? Not the halibut of course.

Where did all this fun happen where you can shoot nice bears and catch those crazy looking water creatures all in the same trip?

Looks like a great time. Nice bear and the last pic is exactly why I don’t swim in unfamiliar waters. Good grief

Waggler I figure because they make their living crunching crab they should be good to eat. A quick search turned up they are considered excellent somewhere between Dover sole and lobster. Looks like easy fillets.
Really nice trip.

My friend says about ten years ago he caught 3 on a fishing trip. Hasn't caught one since. Excellent eating he said it tasted like lobster. Showed me a picture of ones head nailed to a tree. Scares the heck out of kids he says

A friend of mines grandpa was killed by a wolf eel years ago. They fish for them with a orange peel as bait down between the rocks. He put one in the kayak that was not dead and it bit his crotch and he flipped the kayak and died.

His daughter, (my buddies mom), once had me go down to the beach and pick up a bucket with three of them in the bucket to bring up to the house. She warned me that one might still be alive.

I picked one up and it opened its mouth. It has teeth much like a human with molars in the back. I let it bite on to the plywood of the fish cutting table and you could hear the wood crunch as it almost bit through it.

She scored them down the sides with her Uluk and hung them up to half dry to be eaten. The meat looked really good nice and white. The skin turned black as a tire. I was going to try eat one with her but we had to go fishing.
