I'm looking to try a couple of lures for fox and mink while trying to avoid attracting raccoon. This is just for a trail cam, not trapping. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Mark June's "Fox Frenzy" is a favorite of mine.
Coons WILL still investigate it though. Coons are attracted to just about anything that a canine is attracted to, atleast in my experience.
What area in Michigan are you?

I've used Paul Dobbin's (lure maker, site owner and professional beaver trapper) canine lures with great success on my red fox line here in southeast Pa.

I also try to avoid catching coons, possums and anything else that's not a fox or coyote.

Eh...wot?

Most good fox and mink lures, it seems to me, are gland based, either fox glands, mink glands, muskrat glands, or some other glands... or a combination. Although food based lures may tend to keep coon there longer, they are attracted to all animal smells and will usually at least check out any of them. Even straight canine urine is attractive to coon.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

not sure why it's important to avoid coons when you're only camera-trapping...just delete the coon pics.

7.5 years here, and THAT'S your first question?

A lot of great responses and why I've lurked for 7.5 years, @white marlin! laugh

I think I signed up a while back as I was trapping moles/voles in my yard I've had great success, but don't consider myself a real trapper like you guys and/or gals.

@ditchdigger, I'm in SE Michigan and just this summer have seen fox/mink around my pond.

@white marlin, fair point about the coon pics...just don't want more of them roaming about than necessary.

I have never had good luck with any commercial mink lure. It may just be my area but a good fish head or bullheads really interest mink at least in the winter months. A mink is a land animal and a lot of it's time is spent hunting mice and reptiles when there is no snow on the ground. If you have a spot you are thinking of using gland lure I would consider a fish type bait. Of course in summer it can go bad fast but their are baits that are prepared and won't rot. LLL

June's Fox Frenzy
Dobbins RdFx, GL40, Old Grey Buzzard, Digger, Mississippi Special
Cavens Minnesota Red, Minnesota Grey
Fox Hollow GHII, Voodoo

These are my go to lures for fox. Can't help on mink as they are few and far between here.

If you are looking for trail cam pictures of mink you would be more effective directing the camera where they typically run, on a stream bank, rather than trying to attract them to the camera with a lure.

I would think this would be the best method. Critters like mink and otter that run a route and are a here today gone tomorrow are best sought on that travel route rather than trying to pull them off of it. Find the pinch points and bottlenecks that can be covered by camera or trap.

This. I attached my trail cams to the underside of a few bridges, one on each side.
Less chance of a flashflood taking it away and it's out of sight

I’ve caught so many fox over the years using Hawbakers.

I started with it back when I was a small kid.

Hawbakers is not the same formulation as it was before the sale. Red Fox Gland Lure 100 used to be my go to lure but, in my opinion, it is not as good as it used to be. Same goes for the urine.

Eh...wot?

Thanks, Walleye/Warrior/Wetdog! You're right that I may need nothing at all...

Almost any commercial fox lure from a reputable dealer will catch fox. So will raw hot dogs, pepperoni, bacon etc., as they just are not that tough to catch. There may be many good commercial mink lures available but if so I am unaware of it. As the big time cool trapper mentioned, bait is what you want if you are not blind setting them. Years ago Hawbaker had a fantastic mink lure but the last time I tried the formula had changed. Mink take bait. Fresh fish, fresh rabbit, fresh muskrat or beaver. They like red meat.
Raccoons are attracted to almost any odor, period. Granted there maybe times they walk by a baited set, but typically that is not a huge problem.

Sorry that you got chastised for asking a question. Perhaps it is the heat. Perhaps it is a reflection of our society.
Remarks like that are one of the reasons why I have seen a good many excellent trapper stop posting.

I like Carman's Pro Grade lures. Circle maker and Musk Formula are 2 of my favorites.

I wouldn’t worry if it draws them as there already there, it’s not like it’s going to pull them in from miles around, unfortunately no lure is that good
