I'm talking about the kind with wings and feathers... not the two legged ones... but I was wondering. I'm surrounded by cuckoos here and they talk all day, but I've only seen one in 12 years. Aside from that it would be the hummingbird, because they don't exist here oddly enough.

I know for some it might be the gobbler they were looking for in April that never showed up.

Just curious.

Now that I think of it I never did see one of those cuckoo birds when I was over there. Would hear them all the time, usually in the evening, but never laid eyes on one.
Must be like our whip-poor-wills I guess.

The whiskeyjack is not an elusive bird per se,they are almost tame They will land right on your hand if you are holding a piece of bread. But you will never find their nest.

In part, that’s because they nest in late winter.

Yes, the non-two-legged birds are very elusive!!! I see cuckoos fairly regularly here, but hear them by far more often...

Grouse seem to be the ghosts here seen a few yes but most years they are drumming all over in the spring but you very seldom get to see one.

For many years I listened to a strange sounding bird before I finally identified it as a Yellow Billed Cuckoo. To me they sound like a bird from an African jungle scene. I've only seen a few.
After doing a feather study on them I was amazed at the softer earth tone colors and big white spots on black under their tail.
We don't have a lot of them here on the river but do hear them several times during the summer. Makes my day !

Most elusive bird in my life was; a distant relative that didn't care much for my dad gave me a cuckoo clock for Christmas. Something strange happened to that bird after about a week of cuckooing, he never again appeared.

I love hearing those whip-poor-wills at night while going to sleep. First one I ever saw was ran over on the gravel where we lived. Saw a couple since at night with light.

Also love to hear those rain crows too especially in dry weather. Can't say it always rains but at least gives one hope. I have seen a couple.

Thanks Redknot... I only put that in there so Scuba1 or Leftlane wouldn't make some comment about a gal from a bar years ago.

I thought about the two leg factor, but thought the wings and feather thing would cover that.

Thanks for keeping me honest.

Pete

The most elusive bird ever in my life was the prairie chicken and if I ever doubted that I'd try to hunt them.

One of my birding goals has been to photograph as many different species of birds as possible… I’m currently sitting at 409 species photographed. Toughest for me have been some of the rail species, both yellow and black rails I have so far been unable to find.
Cuckoos are definitely one of the harder birds to see, especially for as noisy and common as they are.
