Jack-wills-widow. Sort of like a whip-o-will. Used to hear them in the woods, but only saw one in 15 years when I lived where they migrated. My dog flushed it about dark one afternoon when we were looking for it. Looked like a big snipe bird when it flushed. Didn’t fly far and circled back. Probably nesting.

When I lived on the N.C. Outer Banks we had a head boat captain that took bird watchers out well beyond the Gulf Stream to photograph and document pelagic birds. Met a fellow one day who was nearing 700 I recall. Some watchers start over on New Years Day each year and travel all over the world. It is a serious business. Most customers were from the Washington DC area. They came one weekend per month and could easily be spotted by their garb and equipment. They were very friendly and big spenders.

Thats what we have down here. Seen a couple so far. Serious camouflage on those birds.

Tray use some minute oats for bait for the yellow rails and keep it hidden from the blackbirds, in two days they will find it for your photo-capture.

Search image for sound detection is an acquired talent in the birding world. Wait till you do some Breeding Bird Surveys and have 23 species calling all at once and track who-is-where and fill in the form in those 3 minutes.
American woodcock surveys are great with just one species to remember and not 3 hours in length.

We have Bristle thighed curlews here. I read once that there were only a few thousand of them. They look like a big rusty colored snipe about the size of a seagull. They nest near the village here. I once considered running a tour for birders to see them.

Swift4Me; Now that I've finally regained my composure, after crying with laughter about SJA's blinder there ...

Cuckoo's, in Europe? Trick I was taught, long, long ago? Hear one? Simply survey the landscape. Pick out the couple or so Biggest, most isolated trees in view. Example; If you're in anything approaching a 'patchwork' sort of landscape. Where, perhaps, there may be less than prairie sized fields, maybe hedgerows and the odd, venerable old tree? Singular giants in the landscape. Watch those trees.

'Our' (Nominate form of) cuckoos like to call from such trees ~ murder to spot there, of course. But, then, they may fly hundreds of yards through clear blue skies, across to 'The Other' massive tree.

Try that wink

Thanks Pest's dad. I might try that, but the woods surrounding my pastures are mostly uniform height oak and ash. I figure I'll see one before long as there are so many here.

Pete
