I have a large thermopane that fogs up in winter. It is 66" x78" x7/8". I just got a bid of $ 1,633 to replace it. Is that reasonable? I live in the boonies so I don't have a lot of options.

It's original from 1970. I have owned the house for over 30 years. Warranty is not an issue.

Go get a quote from a glass/window shop on just the window.
Then you'll know what your paying for install.
If you think you could do it yourself and save their labor then go for it.

My guess is you'd have to have help to install it. window should weight approx 250 if 1/4 glass, if 3/8 glass 375.

If it's a good quality window that's not ridiculous.

Sometimes you can refill the window with inert gas and reseal it. Might be cheaper.

So many variables...

What brand window? A Marvin Signature series is a far cry from a lumberyard special and is 3 or 4x as much cost.

Standard size vs custom size = easy way to run the material price up 50%.

Low E?

Argon filled?

Clad exterior or wood?

Does labor include removal/disposal?

Does labor include exterior flashing, caulking and paint (if not clad)?

Does labor include interior trim, paint and possible drywall touch-up?

For labor and material on a complete install of a decent window, $1600 doesn't sound bad...

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Was that quote with a national window company or local?
My last house, I got quotes on I think 4 windows and a sliding patio door by both national and local. National companies were around 7-10x as much as local. Quotes were for low e double pane argon filled vinyl, complete replacement disposal and stucco repair & bathroom window frosted. Local highest was just under $2000
1 national company wanted to charge a fee because of our elevation and climate which was 6000' high desert.

Local Company, the only one within 25 miles
Not Low E
Wood exterior
OA clear tempered insulated glass
Includes removal and disposal of old unit

From what I gather it seems the price is not outrageous.

I'd look for vinyl clad rather than exposed wood.

I need to match the one next to it and the 2 sets of patio doors on either side. This is a large bank of windows facing the lake.
