Cool birds. They are actually a desert quail, transplanted to this part of Idaho more than 100 years ago by the local sportsmen's group. They've not expanded their range appreciably in that time. No longer a season on them in Idaho, but sure nice having them nesting in our yard.

Took these photos this morning.

Pluck that feather sticking up on his head and tie a trout fly.

We have a lot of them on the property here. Little ones are hatching daily. Mom, Dad, and a dozen jelly beans with legs scrambling around the lawn are sure fun to watch. Best bug control around for the garden and orchard.

I used to raise a lot of Gamble's Quail. They are my favorite species of South Western Quail to raise because of their singing and personality. I also raised Valley Quail and two varieties of Blue Scaled Quail, the regulars and chestnut bellies. I made lots of money selling Gamble's Quail hatching eggs and chicks. I would like to get Gamble's Quail again, but they are rarer in my area for sale than Valley Quail and Blue Scaled Quail.

Very nice pictures. I hunted them a fair amount in AZ. With out a dog they can make you mad at them. The will cheat every way possible.

I was in White Sands Missile Range NM for a year. Gambel quail everywhere. They and the cottontail rabbits were smart enough to go inside chainlink fences on the military base to keep safe from the night predators. I was very impressed. And I love the sound of quail also.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Yes, but certainly not as well-developed as the adult males.

I'd put up with a few of those in the yars even if I had to trap the area out for them every fall. Great lookin neighbors you have Gulo
