Cool birds. They are actually a desert quail, transplanted to this part of Idaho more than 100 years ago by the local sportsmen's group. They've not expanded their range appreciably in that time. No longer a season on them in Idaho, but sure nice having them nesting in our yard. Took these photos this morning.

We have a lot of them on the property here. Little ones are hatching daily. Mom, Dad, and a dozen jelly beans with legs scrambling around the lawn are sure fun to watch. Best bug control around for the garden and orchard.

Very nice pictures. I hunted them a fair amount in AZ. With out a dog they can make you mad at them. The will cheat every way possible.

I was in White Sands Missile Range NM for a year. Gambel quail everywhere. They and the cottontail rabbits were smart enough to go inside chainlink fences on the military base to keep safe from the night predators. I was very impressed. And I love the sound of quail also.

Do females have top feather also? Yes, but certainly not as well-developed as the adult males.
