I was watching the cable show mountain man late last night after I got home from work. The old man that is a trapper on show was trying to catch a wolf. They showed him setting this big huge double long spring trap With Teeth on it . They sure wanted to get a good picture of it for folks watching. The old guy had not even had any trap dye on it. Look brand new at least a real light gray color at most. Does a company even make a new trap of any kind with teeth now a days ? I don’t know of any ? also I think the old trapper lives in Montana Or Colorado.
I don’t think you can use a trap with teeth on it in ether of these 2 states ? I don’t think there is 1 state left in USA you can use a trap with teeth on it ? I know this show is really out there about trapping and Mt Man stuff so I am just interested if some one could just answer the above questions for me. I know the show is all wet. Marty

There are actually a few states that allow teeth, don’t know which ones. This topic was covered a few months ago.

Last I knew teeth were still legal in WY. Up until just a few years ago they were legal in KS. Now they are only legal here in water sets.

Here is a livestock protection company (LPC) trap. Still being made I have never used this one. i did heat the dog eye so I could crimp it to prevent back and forth movement. Had to heat the dog post to bend it also so the pan would sit level. Both were to heavy for me to bend without heat. If I ever make a set with it the trap is ready. Me and my grandsons set and fired it a couple times on a mulberry limb. I bought it with factory chain and drag but you can also order them without..

There are still lots of Sleepy Creeks with teeth out there, lots of 100 yr old traps, and any time you have too much money I bet LPC can hook you up.

Which old guy, Maybe Tom Orr?

Yes, that's been explained ad nauseam as well.

All of those shows are put on, very little if any "reality" wink

And no doubt Tom can turn 3 weasels into $300 (or more)

Probably gets paid more than that for every episode laugh

I never cease to be amazed at trappers who seem to think that the laws in their states must be the law in ALL states.

It's a large country with different conditions, weather, species and laws/regulations!

I first met Tom and Nancy Orr back in the late 70's when I lived in NW Montana. They are two of the finest folks you would ever want to meet. They did not have quite
as fancy of a cabin back then, lol. Tom was a marten trapper back then and they both eked out a living working with fur and making traditional items.
I remember stopping by their cabin one day and Tom was not home. Nancy said Oh Tom got a job! Now we can afford some luxuries, like toothpaste. We are so sick of using
baking soda. Tom was also quite the rodeo bronc rider back in the day.
Those two sat in that 100 degree hockey rink all day at the FTA and were as polite and friendly as could be.

Good folks.

Zim

Okay, I'll work this over one more time! I was posting this photo and saying that Tom, Nancy and I go way back (like Zim), but the truth is I only met them at the FTA convention here in Wisconsin, and they couldn't have been nicer.

[Linked Image]

They are every bit as nice in person as they seem on the show. And I know this has been mentioned before, but when Tom creates something out of his furs, etc. people will pay quite a bit for it. I know I would!

grin
