Hi all! My father found this little guy in his yard...we think someone either lost it, or tossed it, cause it sure doesn't seem like a local NY species....

Thanks, and hope everyone is well!

Need more photos.......head-on, underbelly, etc. With all I can see here, it looks to be a young native Common Map Turtle, or possibly a non-native (to N.Y.) Red Eared Slider?

It's most likely a juvenile red eared slider. We need a picture of the head from the side. There are other closely related species of turtles, but red eared sliders got introduced in large numbers, all over the US from the pet trade. Five and dime stores sold millions of them.

Yes, flip it over. Either a map turtle or slider.

The lines on the scutes of the carapace look like the lines on a top map.

The hieroglyphica in their Latin binomial also refers to these markings.

All I can tell you is if you stick your finger by its mouth and you don’t pull back a bloody stump it’s probably not a snapper. grin

Just give him a kiss on the lips, if it kisses back it's a snapper.

The head is in far to see the marks, but it appears to be a red eared slider.

Cool, thanks guys! His garden is miles from a water source, so we're guessing someone chucked it in...
