Most likely it is green will need drying, and if it is tailings from the sawing process, Trim saw ( short pieces of lumber ,slab, and cants)when stacked there is little air circulation and hard to dry.

Basically just the off fall from cutting logs to length, treat it like any green/semi cured wood. I'm fond of scrounging skids from industrial parks and cutting them up for firewood.

I get free block wood from tree cutting services. It is truly random: Most is cut from living trees. The bottom line is you will need to cut to length, split most, and age/dry most. If you are picky about burning pine or cottonwood or whatever; you will also need to cull or dispose of a bunch too.

You should have a pretty good idea what you'd be getting by what they make.

I think he might be better off just buying firewood.

Like Squash said hard to dry because they lay so flat. I got 4x4 and 6x6 from pallet shop and split 6x6 and put them in a crib loose to dry. Worked good for the kitchen wood stove.

Same here, I've burnt 6x6---6x8 pallet shop off fallings for years and if stacked it takes awhile to dry. Dries better just thrown into a pile. Also, be careful opening stove door. It seems one always rolls to the door and will fall out or cover your draft.

I don't have much of an answer, but I do know too much of the wood waste ends up in a landfill.

I burn plenty of it. I never stack it just toss in a big pile and cover, not so tight it can't get air. I even burn cutoffs from my post mill, that is 100% red pine. If it makes heat and is free it's for me. Been heating with wood for 40 years, managing a stove you been feeding for years is a art. You know just how to burn about anything. I don't clean my chimney any more burning red pine than burning oak. I have a couple cords of green oak split for that one or two pieces a day for a night fire. Just what my stove likes.
you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!
