How does it stack up to other knifes. Would a good used one be equal to others available? Would a 16" be good for starter's?

if its a real shefield they dont get much better. should have made in shefield england stamped on it. the wood grips will be held on with a nut not pressed on like file handles.

those green knives with press on handles work but the one i had the handles would come off time to time. i bought file handles to replace them. the steel was soft and when doing beaver i had to touch up the sharp side often.

Thanks Danny
The green knife your talking about was that a Sheffield look alike?? Or was it a cheaper Sheffield? The used one I was lookn at is green and sharpened on both sides, I didn't look for any stamping on it.

if the handles are not held on by a nut on the end, its a cheap knock off. if they are the knife will be stamped if its the real deal

I have not used all brands but I can say that the Sheffield that I have is the best knife that I have ever used. It will take a bit of practice before you stop making pelts look like Swiss cheese. If I put it away between seasons I oil it as it will rust.
