Iowa,
Iowa has a list, if you're on it they call, anytime 3am whenever, you can ask questions, size, hit hard etc, lots of time "broken legs officer dispatched it" yes I'll come get it. Hit hard small deer no thanks but keep me on the list. I been called 5 times in a week, took 3 of them. Sure some waste, free venison yes please.
I was on the list for nearly twenty years till I moved, haven't signed up in my new county.leo issues temp tag on site usually.

There is not a lot of meat on a deer. Average size doe packaged at home averages around 35 meals. Some deer the kids have shot lately were yearning so much less. Heck smoked one at once was gone in 3 days.

Wife homeschools the kids and stays home. Cooks 2-3 meals from scratch a day.

Heck that's not counting the 50 meat chickens we keep from what we raise or the half a beef. And fish we catch.

One year I kept track. I only shot 7 deer and had half a beef that fall. By July we were buying meat.

We like to eat.

Funny snippet. I took my wife out of town for her birthday and my 8 year old went with us. We stopped at a nice restaurant on the way home and he ordered a 12 oz steak.

The waitress asked how he liked his steak. His response " is not as good as moms deer but I will come back"

Yes I do. Why waste fresh back straps and quarters?

What are you talking about? In Michigan I register the roadkill online bring it home Harvest the #1 choice meat, then grind the rest for K9 bait with Boss's bait solution. Your deer may have been shot or arrowed, run off, full of adrenaline, tracked or left overnight. Dragged out of woods. Not to mention a old rutted up buck. Some of them old rutted up bucks are just wall hangers as the meat hardly makes edible sausage. Fresh backstraps off a yearling with tire tracks on the neck or head....That is some # 1 choice deer.
