I went on harvest in 1974 and 1976. Always said I'd like to spend 2 weeks in every small town in wheat country. I ran a Massey 510 the first year and a 760 the second.
From Enid OK to Bowman ND.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Not yet but I'm thinking some people will try it Saturday or Sunday around here. Some green yet in most fields but a few look close. Central KS.

My dad had a harvest crew during the 80's. I went for 3 years until I got married and started a family. Started around Enid, Ponca City, Blackwell area. One time we got moved to the Colby area, got 80 acres out before it got to tough and up comes a storm. Hail beat the wheat into the ground. In a matter of seconds, the crop was wiped out. We ran 4 N6 rotary gleaners. Wheat eating machines. Many memories from that time.

Cut one 40 acre field yesterday, it made close to 55 bushels to the acre. Thinking that might be the worst field we cut for ourselves this year. Don't know if we will have any more dry wheat for a day or two. We are selling to the local elevator unless we find some wheat with protein high enough to get a premium for then we will bin it but so far are tests are looking like average to below protein levels.

How was you growth with the straw this year. Are they bailing any ?
so you protein has to be above 12 or 14% for the premium?

Straw is about average. I'd say about 15% of the straw gets baled around here in a normal year. A dry year more. We bale about 20 bales a year for bedding in case of bad weather during calving.

At least 12% on protein for premium around here. Years protein is above average it can be hard to get much premium at 12
