Depend somewhat on gps electronics to mark and number traps, give me some recommendations. Want something bigger tablet size to mount in my truck. I know I can download a app on my phone for roads and be able to drop markers on, but I am wanting something easy to see with these old eyes. Was watching the guy trapping rats in the Dakotas and he had something like this mounted in his truck to navigate and mark traps. Gonna need something to keep up with a couple hundred traps strung out in 3 counties, and moving them every 10 days or so. I ain't no computer whiz so want to keep it fairly simple. Keeps me from beating on my dog. Thanks

Did a little research on it diggerman and it looks promising. Can't find anything about how many pins you can drop on it at one time. Also can't find if it's a stand alone or if it has to be paired with the alpha hand held. Wonder if anyone is familiar with it.

It has to be paired with the Astro or the alpha to make pin drops

Does it have the capacity to drop 150-200 pins when paired with the alpha?

What’s wrong with your memory?

Plus, if a Johnny Sneak’um can find your traps, why can’t you?

I just use a notebook with my own form of short-hand and symbols. crazy

Buy a cheap tablet from somewhere (Sam's club, Costco, Amazon) and get an OnX Maps or GoHunt subscription. If you're going to be out of cell service just download the maps on the tablet while at home. Mark your waypoints as you go. Even out of cell service it will ping satellites and track your location.

Same here. And as for just relying on my memory, just wait til you get older or your traps get buried under a few feet of snow.

I do fine remembering the original locations -- but when you put out 100 -150 and then start moving them to better locations or removing the non-performing ones, I have problems -- maybe its all the beer I consumed in my youth. Or alzheimers? You need to come out here and trap some nutria ditches with me -- you can't set them all (they don't manufacture enough traps for that) - the ditches all start to run together after about the 3rd day.

My kids are telling me to get a tablet and download the app just like y'all have said. If I stayed drunk all day it wouldn't be a problem remembering where I set um. But I'm trying to cut back a little so I don't crap my pants trying to get my waders off in a hurry. And I know there ain't no way remembering where I strung 100 traps one day, 100 traps the second day, and then go back the third day and try to run the first ones I put out. Then after a week or 10 days pull traps and repeat process again. Kids have got two or three different kinds of tablets, so we're gonna take a dry run tomorrow and try out some different apps to see what is easy peezy for me to use. Google maps might be another app we try to see if it will work. If anyone has any other suggestions on apps to try let me know.

I don't think google maps will do what you are trying to accomplish ( i don't think that the accuracy is there), at least from the pin drops that I receive from a couple of my good customers. I don't have a theft problem on most of my locations and just use flagging tape or small chunks of pvc pipe ( i work in irrigation) to mark the locations. If you use pvc be careful about rising water levels (don't ask me how I know). Some of our river trappers use "creative marking systems" (have to for the liberal duck hunters we have here) such as a plastic bag or a beer canstuck to a branch. I am definetely not a technology guy and will be following this thread to see if there is something everyone likes and seems to work. My cousin was using the onyx and i was mildly impressed by it but haven't taken the time to look closer at it.

I dont know if this is available for phones other than Iphone, but i have an app on my phone called Gaia GPS. I have also downloaded it on an ipad mini with gps capabilities. I use my phone to mark my sets and the ipad mounted on my dash to navigate and know when my next location is coming up.At the end of each day i can connect the two to wifi and sink them together. I can cross an open pasture in fogged out pitch darkness an navigate directly to my next set location or gate. You can also mark any obstacles that need to be avoided, ditches, bull holes and the like. One rule i have made for my self is to mark the set before the bed is dug and remove the way point when the trap is pulled. Hope this helps. Also I have the $10 dollar version and havnt seen a need for the more costly option.

I also have onxhunt. I use it to find and mark all of the corners of the properties that I trap for the first time on to my Gaia map. I mark the corners with white balloons, I mark my sets with red, and when prescouting satellite views from my recliner I use blue for points of interest that I need to put eyes on. As soon as a point isnt needed I remove it to keep my map as clean and uncluttered as possible. I also got an otter box for my I pad for protection. I modified the hard front cover or lid to accept a mount for my dash.

Will check the gaia app out Sue. Does it leave a trail and track where you currently are?

Wonder if any of these apps will plot you a course to your waypoints after you get done marking them? Want to use this set up for gravel roads and black tops culvert trapping. Drove most every gravel road and black top after trapping season late last winter using plat books and marking potential culverts on creeks to set. Planning to drive them again this fall before season opens and narrow down which ones to set and mark them on the tablet. Would be nice if at the end of the day to get in the app and let it line out a route to save back tracking on roads and save time. Don't know if that's possible or not.
