I see no activity on this forum in >month. Curious...what is it about over-dryed or over-frozen fur that makes it worth less: perhaps it weakens the leather, discolors the pelt, or causes hair to fall out? This past Fall I brought in an otter from March '20 and got docked because it was 'dryed out'---per the fur buyer. It was skinned & froze, but not fleshed, dryed, or stretched.

He will have to re hydrate the skin to beam, scrape board then dry it in order to market it.The extra rehydration may or may not lead to issues with the skin.-no way to know when a pelt is offered in that condition,so the middleman buyer has to assume there will be damage.
You would have been better off to scrape board and dry the skin yourself before offering for sale, preferably before it became frost dried rolled up in a freezer.
When buyers get dirty, greasy frozen of freezerburnt hides in a green condition they cannot evaluate the true value of the skin so you will get a low price even if it turns out to be a good pelt after all the extra work to make it that way,and get a true evaluation of final condition.
A very poor way for a trapper to sell fur.

Makes sense.
Thanks.
The only reason this 1 got held over is because March of '20 was when our Covid lockdown hit and the buyer wasn't buying.

Gotcha.
Otter arent that hard to finish-but the dry skins need to be kept in a freezer if holding over the summer to prevent singe.
There is no issues with keeping stretched and dried otter skins in a deep freeze over the summer or until the next fur pick up.
On a side note-tightly rolled up rough skinned otter keep very well in a freezer and are a lot less prone to freezerburn than other thinner skinned pelts.
I would be wary of that fur buyer.
