Anything in a #3 or equivalent, but I've caught a lot of coyotes in 1.75s and 2s over the years. Where will you be trapping?

Great advice as far as I am concerned. The more walkin I have to do the more I have come to like snares. Very portable, easy to rig with the anchors already along the trail, and leathal when you start figuring out how to use them.

First off, let's here what you have now? What you may have could be sufficient for the first time, then you could decide to change if need be. I'm not a big type trap guy. I've ran MB 550's and Bridger #2 dog and dog-less traps for coyote and cats and have caught hundreds of animals with them.

More square inches the better on a trip like that. In the snow you will not cuss yourself as much.
A buddy of mine uses 2s does well with them up here so if that's what you got use them have fun.
Price of gas breaking even maybe what's best hoped for.

Going to be based in Hyattville so the surrounding area. As for gear I have already have is fox ,coon sized. I do have a few dozen Bridger #2 modified dogless ,half dz 750 and a couple duke #5 ls. Didn’t even occur to me about snares! My brother relocated from Cali and bought a house in hyattville a couple years ago and he’s interested in learning to trap. So I’m still weighing buying new gear and having it shipped to him and flying out or Schleping what I have and drive out. Thanks for all the advice!

Going to need something to get around in. as an example one of the ranchs I trap on gets their mail on thursday. the county guy loads a bulldozer on a trailer. the mailman follows him. everytime they get to a snow drift the the county guy opens the road with a bulldozer. I used a little ford ranger a lot. pulled a trailer with an argo, tracks and a cab. you have to cover a really big area in that part of the world. its got a lot of different types of terrain. carry enough stuff to stay warm and fed for a few days. Not many people out there. If something goes bad you cant depend on someone coming along. you get up where the pine marten are you need a snow machine. i used that argo for that . snowmobile pulling a sled is good too.

this is pretty common type of cat location. lots of rock. longsprings have the advantage in these places IMO

yes that trap is old victor coil spring. those long springs are lots easier to use though
