They're bad here. Hammering a bunch of woods; mostly oak, maple, beech, and aspens. Seen them going after some birch and alder too. Between them and the emerald ash borer, it look like fall. How are those pests in your area?

Our state sprays to eliminate them. They spray private and state land, but not federal.

The Lake George region of NY is experiencing the worst gypsy moth infestation in years.

My hunting land is almost 100% defoliated, including all pines and even my blue spruce Christmas trees.

The darn things have stripped about 90% of the trees on my 180 acres. Worst I have seen. The last week and a half they really munched a bunch. I never wanted the BT sprayed on my place......too many other catterpillars die from it. They do it with a plane here. I believe next May I will have the whole spread fogged.

The reason they are so tough on trees is because they hit so late in the growing season that the trees don't have enough growing season left to send out enough new leaves to recover.

I've never seen that happen here. Will those trees survive?

Most will survive first year, mortality increases dramatically each successive year.

How are those worms as bait? I understand catalpa worms are a type of gypsy moth specific to catalpas. Just an idea as catalpa worms go for five dollars a dozen.

Correction, catlpa worms are a type of sphinx moth. Still I wonder if the caterpillars would be good fish bait.

In my area the caterpillars have pupated into cocoons. The damage is done and many trees, particularly the oaks are completely defoliated.

Boy did I luck out with those things. I have found a few but not recently. And our oak look untouched as far as the leaves go but just 50 miles north of us there is visible damage you can seee from the road along route 15 north......jk
