I have a fellow hunting partner (He is 23 and a former student/football player) His fiance was lucky enough to be one of the few people here in Missouri to draw a bear tag for the first ever season. They are going into this blind as we do not live in a part of the state that has higher concentrations of bear.

I told him I would ask around to try to help him find some possible places to start scouting and gaining permission. I obviously thought of our trapping community as we are likely the most in tune folks in the woods these days. If any of you could be of assistance with helping them find some possible hunting locations, I/he would be indebted greatly.

They are great young people that hunt the right way and do things ethically.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone that might help.

KM

I don't know if they can head South to the different areas of the Mark Twain national forest but that's the first thing I would find out. I'm pretty sure a bear in Vernon county will be hard to come by.

I would place an add in one of the add sheets in the area they want to hunt .

"If you have a bear damaging your property I have a bear tag . "

There are a few crops grown along the big creek bottoms in southern Mo . You might talk to the bear biologist about problem areas

Get hold of a few COs and see where they are causing problems that might save them some time.

Good deal on the tag. Our Dept of Cons has been taking a slow turn for the worse the last several years. I am not a bear hunter but for as few that we have and no baiting or dogs I knew the season so far is a token gift that will end up taking very, very few. 800 bears spread across the southern part of the state, very limited number of tags randomly given to those that probably don't have access to the best areas, no baiting or dogs = very, very few taken.

Dont know if the farmers grow oats where you are but if there are bears around an oatfield in the fall they will be there.

Apple trees, pear, persimmon, oak, what ever fruit bearing trees you can find that time of the year. I assume you are allowed to hunt ag land, not baiting but taking advantage of a situation.....jk

Kp also talk to coon hunters, I know a few putout feeders for competition hunting more and more have them coming to the feeders more regularly. You have to hunt so far off the from the actual feeder but maybe can get a pattern of them coming to and from. I'm sure no one wants a bear around where they hunt coon.

FWIW: The tags are NOT transferable, if the gal got the tag, she is the only one that can shoot.

She will be doing the hunting Bob... They are just getting started. I appreciate the bear hunting tips but as of right now they are just trying to align ground to hunt on that holds bears.
Thanks again all

This right here.
Our coast is covered up in huge black bears and they feast on oats.

Good luck and I think the guys who suggest seeking out property owners who have bear problems might be a good strategy

FOIA request the gps coordinates of the tagged bears - ask for frequency - MDC has not yet made it illegal to utilize gps devices so ask them for their own collars info......track it down and shoot a collared bear.
Or you could ask the bear biologist or damage control trappers.....they are running several types of traps and relocating and harassing nuisance bears
