Now that coyotes have moved into NC, I never see a groundhog. Any connection?

Yes, coyotes eat groundhogs. Most coyote dens I have found were made in widened out groundhog holes too.

They've taken to eating possums here now when times get tuff.
Several bait makers use groundhog as a base.

There were very few groundhogs in western Ky when I lived there, but plenty of coyotes. Folks who had grown up there said there were plenty of groundhogs before the coyotes moved in. Here in southwestern Va there are plenty of groundhogs and there are coyotes. I don't know if coyotes can decimate the groundhog population, it may depend on terrain. I do wish the coyotes here would get busy on all the feral cats we have.

Give’em time, lol. Road kill chopped up kitty cats are good baits if you don’t mind the stares of people watching you slinging them in the back of your truck. I threaten my cat all the time that she’s real close to becoming some coyotes meal.

I had a husky that loved killing groundhogs.
Always found two or three dead in the yard each summer.
She managed to get them even when she was tied up.

Maybe coyotes like killing groundhogs for sport like my old husky.

I watched two coyotes sneak up on and kill a groundhog. I was groundhog hunting, set up on a high knob in a field. I saw a groundhog skylined on top of anther hill, maybe 500 yards out. I passed on the shot because I didn’t have a back stop behind it. I kept tabs on it, checking it out occasionally with the spotting scope. I took a look, and saw two coyotes belly crawling towards it in the alfalfa field. Suddenly they jumped up and charged it. One got a hold of it and tossed it into the air. When it landed, the two yotes grabbed it, pulling like a game of tug of war. When I went to leave, I hiked over to take a look. There was very little left of it.

I have also watched a coyote stalk and kill a groundhog. He trotted away with it after he killed it.
