I didn't want to hijack wheelers thread but that reminded me I took a picture of a fungus earlier today and wondered what it was. All I know are morels. The bottom shroom is about 9 inches across and the one right above it to the left is one I flipped over so you could see the bottom. At the base of a dead maple I believe. Any ideas?

Yeah even if 20 straight people said edible I would probably still have to watch somebody eat some and then not die for 48 hours before I tried any. grin

Just to clarify, hen of the woods and chicken of the woods (sulfur shelf) are different. Brocky 100 was thinking it might be a white chicken of the woods, the same thing Horse Creek Fur thinks it is. Never seen one myself, so I don’t know. I just thought some might get confused.

Polypore/bracket fungi. Not sure what variety. Smithsonian Handbooks makes an excellent guide book. Simply called MUSHROOMS by Thomas Laessoe & Gary Lincoff. It is by far the best mushroom guide book I own

Looks like a Ganoderma species, probably G. lucidum or a closely related species from the same complex (= reishi/lingzhi). Not the most typical-looking specimens, but the upper surface tends to lose its trademark luster with time. The stems are still visibly smooth and glossy.

Be easier to eat cardboard! And, you'd likely get more nourishment and flavor from it! LOL

For the mushroom hunters on the forum:

The above link is for Chicken of the Woods. This fellow has many videos covering fungus. He's from western PA.

Hope this helps.
