Carp are a tough fish. It takes a lot to hold them on any type of spear. I had my best luck with bow and arrow.

That's cute. We won't even use ones like that for frogs around here. Mainly because the cottonmouths will bend them up too bad.

If I get up on the fallen trees I can pin them on the bottom or a head hit stops them cold but tossing the spear they pull off pretty easy with the weight of the pole or pulling on the pole to get them in.

if someone has a better spear than the B&M #9 I have been thinking about getting back into spearing and getting a second spear

I’m looking into a Spear with a sling maybe 7 foot long as the distance is rather short here and not that deep, they come into the shallows to suck the algae slime off of the branches in the shallows.

Law Dog The first spear you showed has to short of ties. If the tine goes through far enough that the barb hangs on the belly skin they will not come off. The spear in the last picture would work fine. I made a single tine to spear pike through the ice. I spear carp at times through the ice, they stay on my pike spear. Lift them like it is a hay fork, not with the tines down.

Them scales are tough I went to move one down the bank and tried to poke it with the spear but it would not penetrate the scales it take a good poke to get through them.

I literally just logged on to make a thread about my carp spearing today, but I'll post it here instead. I used the B&M #9 like greencountypete. It worked really well. I was working out of my kayak. I look for them schooling on the surface, and paddle up to them, and chuck the spear into the school. It worked well, as long as I did my part.

Better to have sharp points than big barbs. Goes for arrows too. Imo, barbs are a nuisance and time killer, esp on arrows...When you see the nock and string sticking out the far side of a fish, it's all over

Do like loosegoose did. Drive those tips to the bottom of the spear and those scum suckers are history

Where do you the B&M #9s?

I used to try sticking carp with my frog gig, but I would almost always just end up pulling off a few scales, on the bigger fish. It was frustrating.

I stuck one huge carp, probably close to 20 pounds, 8 times and could never land it. It kept going under a large log, covered with brush in fast, clear water in a pool in a large creek. I would wade out, lay my upper body on the log and worm my gig through the brush, until I could stick it. It had 14 rings on it's scales, so was probably 14 years old.

Its hard to find a spear with tines and barbs big enough to keep carp on. I found one but took a little searching. The smaller ones will frustrate you to no end.

I had one made from horseshoe stock steel bars. It is heavy. Heavy is good for big carp.
The tips do not come to a point. They are ground like a chisel at the tips. It cuts through the scales better. The barbs are significant in size. The carp is not coming off.
This spear works great for gar too.

I got mine off of Amazon. I also got an eagle claw one. The eagle claw is garbage. I bent it just throwing it into the dirt in my yard. The eagle claw has hollow tines, and isn't very sharp. The B&M has solid tines, and is super sharp, plus it's bigger and heavier than the eagle claw.

Mine has the barbs but they don’t hold like they should I should add some steel wire bards but tough to get them off then, but it’s bait so pretty is not required.

This spear works great for gar too.

Mine is home made from an old pitchfork with large tines. Tips are ground like a chisel also. I don't throw the spear but stab them and try to push them into the mud to get good penetration. Not pretty but it works for me.

Our sucker spears were made years ago byt a blacksmith, they were made out of flat stock and had 5 tines. Spear them behind the head across way and hold the on the bottom for a minute, they didnt come off but they only weighed 6 to 9 lbs.
