It's very important to be able to hear what that wire or stick Is doing when welding.

There's no substitute for practice no matter what you weld with. Get a bunch of scrap and spend a bunch of time sticking it together.

This is about the best advice right here. Just like swimming, you cant learn it out of a book or online.
Look in the destruction manual of your machine to get you pointed in the right direction as to how many amps you need for what material thickness and then get going to stick things together. Then cut the apart again and start over. You can post pics of your welds on here and I am sure that the resident experts will tell ya what you may have to change.

For the resident experts ::: he is not trying to weld a gas pipeline or a tanker together. Good enough is good enough for any application.

I practise on trap stakes and square tubing all the time, not all the time, but that is the extent of my welding.

Really, for most trapping purposes, a guy can just burn a lot of hot tacks to hold things together. If ya want to keep it simple.

Thats my point. Fit for purpose is good enough. If ya just want to stop a coon from making off with your trap you have an easier job to do as my bandsaw for example where ya got 6 tons of blade tension and 24 horses to keep in line and if things come apart someone ( probably me ) is going to get hurt. I pay more attention to things like engine mounts and the bits that hold and adjust the blade that I do for non critical parts. No point in stacking dimes with the big weld for a bit of flat bar that will hold the water tank in place fr example.

I was certified on Mig Tig and stick. I prefer welding with stick. Nothing better then the smell of 7018 In the morning. Lee will back me up on this LOL

not only did the 7018 smoke mess up your sence of smell it affected youre brain cells too..j/k.... now a hot day inside a tank with 4 or 5 other guys burrning 6010 all day filling pits now thats a smell ya can rubb off ya teeth!!

Buy all my metal from the scrap yards. Alot cheaper than the stores and ya never know what kind of goodies you'll find also

What I bring to the scrap yard will fit in my pants pockets. There is not such thing as scrap, just a lack of imagination. The saw mill I am building started life as a boat trailer and a 6x6 ATV.

Still practicing. Definitely noticing the bacon sizzle and how the sound changes to a less pleasant popping when the stick out is too far or when I weld over dirt and slag. I made my first real project, a couple of gambrels that I bent and then welded a cross bar on for support. Still having fun and learning when I get the time.

My first project was a grill for a pig cooker.

Good looking gambrels. I added a couple of short pieces of rod in , the bottom corners. handy to put a twine around . To keep the one side from falling off , when you remove the first. Also adds strength , for to hold , that big buck , you are going to get this fall. Also a washer , or rod loop, at top to hang by.. I found that used steel electric fence stakes, have about enough , length to make a nice gambrel, when cut up. . Have fun, with your new hobby. old243

Good job! A bit of advice: your 2nd pic of 2 pcs of rebar welded side by side, the "holey" weld to start, then better, caused by 2 metals weren't hot enough. As you welded, heat caught up, then metals began to fuse. Circle your gun at the start, then go. Those welds look great for a beginner!
