How you guys feeling?

I try to get a gauge on up coming possible prices. Last year I only trapped some around some cabins so I can keep access to private property bow hunting. This year's prices look like its going to be even worse. I think I might finally switch target species.

I think the prices may be a little higher but the cost to produce them will likely off set any rise in the price of the fur. That is just my guess based upon what little I've looked into it and my knowing the price of gas and supplies will be much higher than last season.

I need to do some management on properties this year to knock their numbers down. If not for our game laws I would be ditching all but the best.

Gary Schroeder: There is interest in the best northern coon, but only at the current price. The very best may fetch a few bucks, while the rest remain downright cheap. Midwest buyers who once specialized in coon have gone out of business, and its hard to see where a trapper might sell green skins. Trapper sales also report low averages for stretched and dried goods because most novice trappers do not have the skill to properly flesh and stretch raccoon hide.

These 2x and larger southern coon will be skint and put up. Any with scars, sores or bad back fur and all smaller ones will be discarded.

Even at a low price coons usually pay my entire fuel expenses for predator jobs.

Hopefully up a few bucks as gonna cost lot more this year to get them, I am pretty sure that a few bucks on average more is it, if anything , if gas is $4-$5 a gallon an same low price as last season, to expensive for gas to run around so much, depends how much gas u burn but still, everything cost more, cost living is way up an get worse, I am thinking in future that coon market may be go out , as worth very little in few years, so not much coon trapping, I don't know but what I thinking

I know you're quite a bit north but why do you think that is?

Even those of us who do know how to properly finish coon reported low averages even on the best Northern coon. Trap coon if you have a meat market, nuisance job or you want to loose money. I have killed more coon than distemper but won't kill another until they get back to a real price. Making money for others is in my opinion a fool's errand. Greg is also incorrect when he says it is hard to find a Midwest buyer who specializes in coon. The guy I am thinking of is the only one in the Midwest buying them for cheap and him and his partners are the same ones buying them at auction in the pt room. LLL

Yes, it is amazing how many of us are trying to keep coons out of sets, and yet the price is still pathetic. My theory is that if coon prices rise, it will be easy for folks to increase their coon catches thereby driving the price right back down.
