They three types of cast rod I've used through the years has been, nickle, ferrol weld stick rod, and a square cast iron rod used with the oxy-ace torch. I'm always a little hesitant to try this new stuff, because it usually promises such great results, but doesn't live up to them. Specialty rods are always very expensive , so I do it the old proven way!

Years ago i welded between number one and two cylinders on my diesel tractor . I got the rods from a traveling salesman that seen us welding on another project . He left samples . They worked as he said they would . I built it up between the cylinders and cut the bead down with a 14" basturd file , it worked remarkably well .it looked better than the last head I had plained . All the nickle ive ever used is to hard . I can't remember what those rods were and think the head gasket has blown between cylinders 3 and 4

I wonder if it was "Certanium" brand rod.I have used certanium cast rod with great results. You just have to pre-heat the cast with the torches before welding.

Interesting post lots of good old stuff hhas been bought out a replaced with almost as good junk usually poor cheaper to manufacture flux used a 99 nickle rod on engine blocks believe it was certanium could be cut like butter small runs long pauses sometimes you just cant pre-heat or can't heat enough and cause more problems also had a bronze ac rod that was used for lifting lugs or cracks on old lake freighters old stuff like horse-drawn binder gears had a lot of lead in them and was better off brazed Eutectic made good stuff This is from back in the last Century and i've since passed thru that veil of tears

I found that more important that the filler used is the pre heat regimen if that part is not done right ya can spend till eternity chasing cracks

That and not all cast is created the same.
