I decided it's time to buy a winch I have been putting off for years. Just high centered my tractor long way on a log.
I think one that is in a cradle and slides into a reciever hitch is what I need. I can move that from vehicle to vehicle and make a mount t o slide it In on trailers. I'm thinking polly rope for less weight and no burs like on cable.
Any recommendations

Warn is the best, but they also cost a lot more. I have two Warns on my Toyotas, one I bought in high school and the other I bought about 15 years ago. Both going strong without ever having any problems. Have had to replace cable for being kinked and burred up. For a cheaper alternative I have an ENGO on my Dodge, less than half the price of a Warn, really good reviews, and I've never had a problem with it either, except all the little bolts like hold the lever to switch from freespool to engaged and the ones that hold the control box on, were either not tightened at the factory or have a tendency to rattle loose (big diesel, it vibrates more than a gas rig) I would recommend putting loctite on them. I have it in a reciever mount so it can be moved from front to back, most winches have the same bolt pattern so they will bolt onto whatever mount you wish. Warning, regardless of brand, they are heavy, if you have a bad back I don't recommend moving them by yourself.
I prefer cable over poly myself, it will burr up and kink but you can still use it safely when burred up and kinked, get nicks in poly and you need to replace it. Cable holds up much better to being drug over rocks, logs, etc. When you're stuck you don't always have the option of having the cable/rope stretched unimpeded through the air between the vehicle and your tieoff point. if you are nose down in a ditch you may need the cable to drag/winch through the other side of the ditch to attach to the only available tree. Cable holds up better to this.

Don’t be anywhere close to that poly rope when it breaks. Lotta stretch there.

X3 on the Warn. I just spent $800 rebuilding my M12000 after buying it in 1985. Updated clutch and new motor. I've replaced the cable at least 7 times maybe more. Couldn't give me a poly rope. I bought a Harbour Freight 12000 lb winch for a backup while rebuilding my Warn. Had to use it twice and it pretty much self destructed. the control sits over top of the spool and stacks and then kicks the control box off the mounting. Soft metal throughout the entire constuction, cheap hardware, and the cable (Chinese) forms a memory immediately. Probably going to find somebody I don't like and give it to them!! LOL Buy a Warn or Ramsey.

They make and sell a braided synthetic rope for winches, can be had from Harbor Freight.

Badlands winches are pretty good for the money, not to hip on the small warn winches (2500-3000) series. For like wheeler's or trailer's an such , but the 6000-8500 lbers are pulling fool's an hold up good. I got a champion winch that I had on 2 4-wheelers and used it to lift the Snow plow up an down with. Still no problems with it at all.
If you go with synthetic rope start out with it on new winch and rollers, and if changing from cable to rope buy new roller .
Let me sugar coat this

Don’t be anywhere close to that poly rope when it breaks. Lotta stretch there. No doubt. Put a tarp or even your coat over the cable or rope. When it snaps it helps to deaden the backlash

Can you believe they sell a little thing to throw over the cable in case it breaks for $20! LOL

I ignored atv winches because he was talking a pickup winch, but I have a 3500 Badlands on my atv that has been good, with those check the reviews, the 2500 has very poor reviews while the 3500 is good. Had a warn 2000 on my first fourwheeler, was a good winch, next fourwheeler came with a "supposed" Warn with Arctic Cat stickers on it (according to dealer Warn made it, he may have been lying) it was junk, next fourwheeler I bought without a winch and immediately put the 3500 Badlands on it.
Buy a big enough winch for what you plan to put it on, rated for at least half again, preferrably close to twice what your vehicle weighs. Remember you are mainly going to use it when you are stuck and are going to be pulling not only the vehicle but the drag of the snow, mud, whatever you are stuck in. I run 8000's on my Toyotas, I've seen a few with 6000's that the winch wouldn't pull when stuck good (they weigh about 4500 dry) and a 12000 on my Dodge diesel.
And make sure you have a Good battery or your winch won't pull to its capacity.
