I decided it's time to buy a winch I have been putting off for years. Just high centered my tractor long way on a log.

I think one that is in a cradle and slides into a reciever hitch is what I need. I can move that from vehicle to vehicle and make a mount t o slide it In on trailers. I'm thinking polly rope for less weight and no burs like on cable.

Any recommendations

Warn is the best, but they also cost a lot more. I have two Warns on my Toyotas, one I bought in high school and the other I bought about 15 years ago. Both going strong without ever having any problems. Have had to replace cable for being kinked and burred up. For a cheaper alternative I have an ENGO on my Dodge, less than half the price of a Warn, really good reviews, and I've never had a problem with it either, except all the little bolts like hold the lever to switch from freespool to engaged and the ones that hold the control box on, were either not tightened at the factory or have a tendency to rattle loose (big diesel, it vibrates more than a gas rig) I would recommend putting loctite on them.
I have it in a reciever mount so it can be moved from front to back, most winches have the same bolt pattern so they will bolt onto whatever mount you wish. Warning, regardless of brand, they are heavy, if you have a bad back I don't recommend moving them by yourself.

I prefer cable over poly myself, it will burr up and kink but you can still use it safely when burred up and kinked, get nicks in poly and you need to replace it. Cable holds up much better to being drug over rocks, logs, etc. When you're stuck you don't always have the option of having the cable/rope stretched unimpeded through the air between the vehicle and your tieoff point. if you are nose down in a ditch you may need the cable to drag/winch through the other side of the ditch to attach to the only available tree. Cable holds up better to this.

Ill second the Warns. I've only ever bought one cheaper one, forget the brand but the gears in it stripped out after a year or so pulling a racecar into the trailer a couple times a weekend.

The Warn in the trailer now was bought in 2004.

Don’t be anywhere close to that poly rope when it breaks. Lotta stretch there.

X3 on the Warn. I just spent $800 rebuilding my M12000 after buying it in 1985. Updated clutch and new motor. I've replaced the cable at least 7 times maybe more. Couldn't give me a poly rope.
I bought a Harbour Freight 12000 lb winch for a backup while rebuilding my Warn.
Had to use it twice and it pretty much self destructed. the control sits over top of the spool and stacks and then kicks the control box off the mounting. Soft metal throughout the entire constuction, cheap hardware, and the cable (Chinese) forms a memory immediately. Probably going to find somebody I don't like and give it to them!! LOL
Buy a Warn or Ramsey.

They make and sell a braided synthetic rope for winches, can be had from Harbor Freight.

Looks like the warn VR series is made in china and has a lot of problems from my quick search.

I was hoping to not go over $1200 and be able to buy one tonight and have it waiting for me when I get home on Friday morning from work.

Summit racing has a 8k Ramsey qm for around 1300 much cheaper than other on line adds but won't drop ship tell the 4th.

I'm not sure if 8k and 95' of cable is enough but the winch Is 95lb without mount and cable. The 9000lb is 200 more has 115' of cable and heavier

I "think" 8k with a block should be enough? It is a portable winch it's not like I'm mounting it to the front of my Diesel excursion. If I did that I would get a much larger winch and then when I needed one that vehicle would end up being broke down rendering the winch useless to me.

I'm still looking but it looks like I'm going to be out of luck just ordering something quality that will meet the need with fast shipping.

The next level up i US made Warn is a few hundred more and out of stock so far also

Badlands winches are pretty good for the money, not to hip on the small warn winches (2500-3000) series.
For like wheeler's or trailer's an such , but the 6000-8500 lbers are pulling fool's an hold up good.
I got a champion winch that I had on 2 4-wheelers and used it to lift the Snow plow up an down with.
Still no problems with it at all.

If you go with synthetic rope start out with it on new winch and rollers,
and if changing from cable to rope buy new roller .

Let me sugar coat this

Search reviews on the Badlands Winches, you may be suprised how many people really like them, even former Warn owners. You're paying for the name on the Warn some IMO.

My atv came with a warn winch that didn’t last a year. Replaced it with a warn and it also didn’t hold up. I bought a cheap Super Winch on sale. This was over 12 years ago and it still works great.

No doubt. Put a tarp or even your coat over the cable or rope. When it snaps it helps to deaden the backlash

Can you believe they sell a little thing to throw over the cable in case it breaks for $20! LOL

I ignored atv winches because he was talking a pickup winch, but I have a 3500 Badlands on my atv that has been good, with those check the reviews, the 2500 has very poor reviews while the 3500 is good. Had a warn 2000 on my first fourwheeler, was a good winch, next fourwheeler came with a "supposed" Warn with Arctic Cat stickers on it (according to dealer Warn made it, he may have been lying) it was junk, next fourwheeler I bought without a winch and immediately put the 3500 Badlands on it.

Buy a big enough winch for what you plan to put it on, rated for at least half again, preferrably close to twice what your vehicle weighs. Remember you are mainly going to use it when you are stuck and are going to be pulling not only the vehicle but the drag of the snow, mud, whatever you are stuck in. I run 8000's on my Toyotas, I've seen a few with 6000's that the winch wouldn't pull when stuck good (they weigh about 4500 dry) and a 12000 on my Dodge diesel.

And make sure you have a Good battery or your winch won't pull to its capacity.

I found a truck accessories shop within 30 min of work that has a Warn Zeon 10,000 lb winch with cable on their website. Since they only have 2 winch model on their sight and the 10k is on sale I'm hopeful they are in stock and not drop shiped like most places on line. I will call them when they open maybe I will get lucky. Maybe I will get really lucky and they will have the multi mount cradle and longer wires for the battery connector so it will reach the rear hitch.

This will put a dent in my welder money but make getting my tractor unstuck easier among other things. Then again I bet with a little creativity I could drive the tractor off the log it's on. I bet I can rap a strap or chain so it will wind around the tire tread while it spins winding it around the tire and essentially winch it's self backwards.

I saw that in a military vehicle recovery book for the jeep kaiser m 715s I used to have. Natural I had to try it when I got it stuck. It was more work than just pulling it out with the jeep I had available but it did work.

I have the Badland 3500 on my 6 wheeler and really like it. When Im pushing snow the small ATV batteries would go dead from the winch going up and down pushing snow, So I put a 950 CCA battery in the box and no problems. The winch is close to 8 yrs old with no problems at all.

Well none of the shops within 30 min of work had anything in stock. A place in Louisville 35min from my farm dose but they are high by 200 onThe American made models. He had a 12k Smitty built and Chinese Warns with cradles for around 800. About half what he wants for the American made models. I'm tempted to go with the Smitty built 12k with synthetic line because of price and weight with cradles will be 92 lb.

I prefer American made but even then it's American assembled with globally sourced parts"china" hence the overwhelming temptation to buy the full on Chinese made model and save 50% and put the rest in a higher end welder or that beaver tail boat and trailer my cousin traded for but now wants to sell because he just bought a small open deck ocean fishing boat. Would make a nice trapping boat comes with every option and new boat trailer.

Decisions decisions.

Update. So I went to the semi local 4x4 shop and fell to their recommendation and got a Smitty built 12k cable winch. I had reservation but....

So got home started to assemble it and right away I'm missing a small bolt and tab that holds the electric stuff on in the middle above the cable. I'm irritated but want to get my tractor out so preceded to mouth it on the side option. Naturally I discovered once it was together it will not fit in the cradle mounted there. In addition it's flimsy and while trying to line the bolt holes up before I noticed it lacked 3/16 of clearing it contacted on the toggle power button and it fell off. It snapped back on but no longer works

Yep it's going back and I'm going to trade it on a Warn as long as they don't give me any problems. If it's missing parts right out of the box and breaks that easy that else is it missing on the inside. Sure won't last long on my farm.

Yes I knew better.
