and shot wayyy too much for my own good. Im gonna be sore. Very inconsistent, especially at first, which i guess is to be expected. One question-my d loop is canted left and when i put the release on it twists the string slightly. Is this affecting anything?

I spent half the day looking for my carp gear then put it on the bow I got out to the water and could not pull it back with a sore shoulder. I turned it down a bit went out again no carp moving, great day. LOL

The d-loop twisting slightly is it doing it's job of lessening the torque of whatever type release you're using. You can lessen this more by using a release with a rotating/swiveling head.

When you tie the loop on do have the knots finished on opposite sides of the string? (It's hard to describe)

I turned mine down I’d do that and work the muscles as you go to back to full draw weight.

Its a Parker Wildfire i bought in 2008. Nothin fancy. Got into shooting it a lot with my neighbor for a couple years then i moved and i cant remember if i have had it out after that until about a year ago. He kinda taught me the little i do know about it as he bow hunted and shot 3d so im youtubing to brush up on some things. Id like to smack a doe with it this fall.

Yes thats an accurate description. An archery shop did it when they tuned it 10-12 years ago.

I've lost a lot of upper body strength in the past few years and I think most of my bow hunting days are behind me. Sucks getting old. It was a good run.

Thats why they make crossbows! Some of those probably have more capabilities than blackpowder with a round ball.

How old is the string (saw the 10-12 year figure which is WAY too long)? They should be changed every few years. A cheaper string will rotate usually the most as will loose serving as alot of times they haven't been served under pressure (we do ours at 400#). Temporarily you can just hand rotate the loop till the peep is correct for you. Doesn't matter it its not exactly in line. I peep is 180 degrees off can just have shop turn the peep around.

I waxed it a couple times while its been sitting and i always kept it waxed while i used it. Are u saying its unsafe to use? Already had a release tear at the wrist strap while coming to full draw a couple days ago. Luckily i heard it and let it up in time.

I have a twenty year old Hoyt Havoc with original string and cables. Wouldn't hesitate shooting it.

Sorry just my opinion but just think the string/cables is what keeps the bow the way it's meant to be and how much tension it's under (I know limbs, riser but without a string they are mute). While waxing is good remember it doesn't get to the string under the center and end servings even though some guys feel rubbing it with fingers or leather or whatever will. We get alot of bows in as some guys usually get them out just before season (notice said some) and have had them stored various places, under the bed, hanging in the garage, etc. Usually had at another shop helped at bows come in that had just been set under the bed at end of season and never taken out till next season just to find strings broken under nock point Look at the angle or bend the cables are where they come off the eccentric post and also the angle when you draw the bow with. All personal preference and there are exceptions. Something to keep in mind also is the type of material used. 20 years ago think we used BCY 450 Plus, can't remember if this is when it was switching to BCY 452X or not. Those materials basically don't have alot of stretch to them so are a "harsher"(?) shot then Dyna Flight 97 say. and help to keep peep rotation to a minimum
Maybe one thing to help make a decision is the cost of replacing them versus not changing it. Good quality sets by private business(Winners Choice, 60X, etc.) can cost about the $125.00 range. You'd also though have charges for installation, tuning, etc. probably depending on your dealer. Also if changing them make sure they are the right size (guy came in who bought the bow from a outlet stare that had it's own model only available from them They ordered them and then told him to bring it to us. Here they didn't read their own tag and had ordered a string that was 10" too long..
Alot to consider but personally I'd change mine if it was mine.

If not lots of shots, strings and cables last. Mine are 11 years old. I bet I don't even have a thousand shots out of them.

Again this is just my fwiw but keep in mind the tension it's been under that amount of time. All personal preference.

If I had someone in my area competent to build new string and cables and I intended to keep shooting this bow, I would go ahead and have them build them. The bow is completely serviceable, just antiquated.

I only change a string if it starts to come apart or show signs it might start, I wax mine often.

Then guess again to the original question just rotate the loop (like a nut and bolt) till when you pull it back the D loop and peep are good for you. Shouldn't matter whether target shooting or hunting, mine never did.
