will a .410 pattern tight enough to dust English sparrows at 20 yards? Yup, if you use finer shot it won't be a problem. # 8 shot = good, #4 shot = not so much. Charlie

even tiny ones? The finer the shot the better at close range like 20 yards. 9 shot or even 10's or 12's. Smaller shot means more per oz, that make a denser patter, 10s and 12s are not common, but I have a case of 12s. Can some one post a picture of a box of 410 shells that says 2 3/4s on it. As far as I know they were never a factory round. 2 1/2" yes 3" yes.

You can kill anything with a .410 that you can a 12ga. if you use it correctly. There are lots of successful turkey hunters using them these days and I've likely killed more pheasants with a .410 than any other gauge. I buy a box or two when its available and somewhat affordable and that keeps in supply when its harder to find. I agree 100%. I’ve loaded a bunch of 410 shells with TSS. Makes it just as effective if not more effect than larger gauges. You should see the looks I get when I show up to the goose field with a 410!

Maddog, I'll keep an eye out around here. Shotgun shells haven't been nearly as scarce as rifle/pistol around here... However .410 is always a bit of a novelty in this area, not real common even in the best of times.

I take it the 3 inch shells are better for squirrel? what about pests around the house? how far are the 2 3/4 effective for vermin?
(guess you can tell I don't have a .410...yet) I like the 2 3/4 # 7 1/2 shot for vermin and # 4 shot - 3 inch magnum for knocking squirrels down. My thoughts are less shot but bigger size to poke through the squirrels hide. Not too many in the meat. Sometimes I have to wait a minute or two for the bushy tail to lose his grip and fall.

I stocked up when Walmart had them for $6.95 for 25 2 3/4 # 6 and 7 1/2 the 3 inch were $9.95 a box. I have saved every hull to reload someday. I have a couple thousand #209 primers and no re loader yet. Wish they made the Lee Load All in .410
