I found that Hamburger Helper type stuff etc is a lot cheaper.

Carb overload and ultra processed junk is the easy way out for light weight and stability but too much just doesn't sit well for me.

Pre-cooked bacon, salami/sausage, jerky, cheeses, nuts, dehydrated eggs, butter/tallow, a frozen steak for night 1 or 2, etc are a few of what I've brought on some excursions with success.

I also have spent extra $$$$ for ultra light gear (pack, tent, bag) along with going fairly minimalist so I can bring more/better food!

One of my favorite but it'll need a layer of Malkins Rasberry Jam on top of the peanut butter! I love Pilot Bread!

I spent about 4 months backpacking in Alaska and many more months throughout my life in the north and on the Pacific Crest Trail. One of my favorite was Rice a Roni spiked with extra butter. Also ate a lot of Ramen Noodles. If you add a handful of potato flakes it thickens it up nice. Mac and cheese ain't bad, either.

I know when backpacking weight is a constant issue. However one of the things I craved when I came out of the bush was citrus. I started packing in 3 or 4 oranges and spaced them out every other day or so. Heavy, but a real treat.

The thing I craved the most was animal fat. Whenever I would come out I would head for the nearest burger joint and get myself the biggest, greasiest burger I cold find.

Jello -- put in snow bank or ice cold mountain stream to solidify. Big fan of humus - crackers-cheese. Pancake mix espescially if huckleberries are in season. We dry our own apples, tomatoes, prunes -- etc. Carbs or not -- I go for calories and flavor.

Goober jelly sandwiches I make a loaf into individual bagged sandwiches then put them back in the bread bag until I want a couple. Teddy grams and canned chips work well also.

The most important question. How far are you going to hike? I just hiked to the Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshal the other day. 46 mile round trip and did it with a 48lb pack. Carrying cans of food is not ideal in that situation.

How far and what does the terrain look like?

Those Peak meals are pretty delicious. Definitely pricey, but again, if you were setting off on a 7 or 8 day 140 mike trip, they’re well worth the money because of the near weightlessness of them. That, and a jet boil, and it’s like a delicious meal in under 2 minutes.

I always start with a gallon bag of my wife’s homemade rolled oats granola. Easy to eat and has plenty of calories. And delicious. I save the hot meals for dinner and sometimes breakfast - depending on what I’m doing the next day.

Jerky is easy to eat, as is trail mix. The most important part of these items is that you can eat while walking and that’s important if you’re trying to get anywhere.

I hear that black orvis will match the midway sale price if you call them, in case midway is out of a certain meal...

When I was in Montana for 10 days in the snowcrest range we packed light as possible except for food. Close to 30 pounds each of food. Lots of nuts, summer sausage, cheddar cheese? Dehydrated beans ready in 5 minutes, lentils, and that was in my bag of supper food for three that was in my group. Snack bag had most of the nuts pristine bars m&ms, and breakfast was granola oatmeal milk powder eggs bagels stuff like that

Trapping is what built North America, why take that away?

Around here we always travel with a bag of dried smoked salmon or strips. Dried moose meat a small containor of seal oil to dip the dried meat and fish, and Sailor boy pilot bread.
Often times someone will bring home baked or fried bread ,and Agutuk for desert. (That's fish ,berries sugar, fat whipped together. its better than it sounds)
