You are in a River and you are Catfish Noodling .

Why in the heck would anyone go swimming in the River, in water where you CAN'T SEE what is in it ; just to catch a big old Catfish with your bare hands ?? Is this a recent new fad ???

Actually quite old. Because big cats are cavity nesters and quite vulnerable to getting grabbed during the spawn and most importantly doesn't require special gear. Simple straight forward way of putting meat on the table.

Ancient people noodled fish all over the world, since probably before recorded history.

We always did it for fun and released everything. We also dug out beds in winter when river was down and make maps of them all. Make sure the holes slope up and can't hold air pockets. Bad things can be found inside if it holds air. Lots of older folks used a short stick with an orange ribbon on both ends and a big treble only on one end. They would stay in the boat probing the river banks for holes and if one was there, it would hit the ribbon. Then just put the other end in the hole. These were mostly older folks hunting meat. I've seen guys use the stick to find them, and then go grab them. I've not seen the hook used in 40 years or so.

When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

I'd try it. Stick my foot in muddy water beaver entrances all the time, why not catfish?

If you gonna always be spooked by stuff you can't see you'll never make it down here. We got half a dozen snakes that can send you to the ER, and another three dozen that can give the skeered a coronary, gators, two kinds of snappers, catfish as big as a grown man, gars that can get as big or bigger. Our water is mud brown or black, we got vegetation that resembles jungles.
If you can't handle that then stay in the air conditioning.

BTW, our younguns run barefoot through most of that.

Exactly laugh

Can't remember which varmint it was, either beaver or nutria, that an old timer told me his buddy got ahold of noodling, went up his arm biting repeatedly.

Must be a lot of brave people down South that count in units of 8 or 9 because they lack a few fingers then?
