Got some mink body grips to rig up for dry land trapping. I like to swivel all my body grips and I’m thinking about a 3/32 cable rig with a barrel swivel in it. I have zero experience with them. I like to have my gear much stronger than needed. I once caught a 40lb domestic by the foot in a belisle 120. Held fine and released unharmed. Are the 600lb barrel swivels up to that ? F&T has them on sale this month. Good ? Bad ? Opinions?

Work good, got them on 160 and 120 conibears.
Chains on conibears are the first thing I cut off.
Still gonna keep bigger swivels on my 280's and 330's.

Let me sugar coat this

I don't know how important a barrel swivel Is on a body grip but It sure makes a difference when using CRs.
I figure In most cases a body caught critter is not going anyplace and with a decent amount of chain or cable you won't have any problems. I have 8' of cable on all my large body grips and If that critter isn't dead right away It has lots of room to flop and roll around and not break the cable. Never had any Issues with short chained 160s In coon sets with either chain or cable. Same with all the marten I caught when trapping In Canada.
But If It works for you go for It.

Hern's picture above is a #8-9 (depends on sells them) rated for 800 lbs. and will be much more than needed. I have used them (barrel swivels) for over 10 years and they outlast the cable! Suggest you try for a less expensive box/universal swivel for the 120 style BG's. I have used a variety of swivels on ALL mine (BG's) for over 15 years and they have saved me some fur through that time. Barrels are a little pricey and are reserved for coyotes. Can recall several foot caught beaver, 2 neck caught coyotes, over 10 fox and lots of coons through the years, in 220 sized traps, that were alive and twisted but the swivels (I believe) prevented loss. Oh and as beartooth trapper suggests, get rid of your twin loop chain and use smaller straight link or even lock link (like on the old Newhouse # 1's-1.5s, yes its still sold) and your tangle problems will be GREATLY reduced. Cable is not dependable for me in the long run due to the internal rust (when it gets stiff it is starting to go)...................... my take on a tip ................ the mike
