I usually carry a 22/410 to pot meat while trapping. 99.9% of trapped fur is dead, and if I see furbearers while trapping I expect them to turn up in a trap next check. I do use a gun to shoot nuisance beaver on occasion.A lot of times if there is a pair of beaver at a nuisance spot you can take care of the problem with a gun in one trip.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I carry one most all the time on the line.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Ny won’t let me carry a pistol yet, so I leave a .22 in the truck. I only end up using it on about one skunk a year

Only carry (44 mag) during spring and mid summer, when scouting trapping areas, for bear protection. During trapping season water critters are dead, land sets animals use dispatch pole.

10/22 here, sometimes I just take our little cricket single instead.
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Does anyone here not bring one along? i have at times trapped a place where the condition of me trapping it was no firearms use. it is a city owned property not in the city but adjacent to it in WI on a all water line it would not be for trapping

With the numbers of lions we have in the “foothills” throughout the state here? Never go into the hills without. Not all mountain lions understand their place in the food chain and I sure don’t want to encourage bad habits.

Nope….just my hardwood walking stick…just a water trapper. But seeing more bears in the hood ….might change my mind, this year.

Almost always have a gun of some type on me, sitting here at the computer drinking coffee I have a 357 in my pocket. Carry a 22 revolver usually for dispatch, or occasionally a 22 or 22 mag rifle if I want it to double as a pot gun (while I've shot a lot of grouse with a 22 pistol, I've also missed a lot, not the worlds best pistol shot). Anything else carried on the line is for some other purpose than trapping, whether it is a deer rifle because deer season is open, a rifle because I might try and call in a wolf or coyote, or gun I am bringing along just to test a new load in at some point where I can target shoot along the line. At one time we used to have to use a centerfire if dispatching wolves with a firearm (stupid rule, because they were classified as big game; since changed years ago) and I carried a little 22 Bee Imp. or since it was a beautiful little blued and curly maple gun, a stainless Mini-14 if weather was bad. If we still had that rule I would carry my Contender pistol with either a 22 Hornet or Bee barrel on it today, but I didn't own that gun back when the law was in effect.

Unless you have had issues in the past, I can't say it's not optimal to to not have a gin of some sort on the line. What brand of gin do you recommend? I'm not saying its a bad idea, just need more specifics. Must be a cougar trapper!

A lightweight .223 for critters like wolves and wolverines I see running around the trap line, a .410 for grouse, rabbits, and ptarmigan, and a .22 pistol for dispatch of wolves and wolverine. Never leave home without them.
