Too early in the year for tree chewing

This is the time of year for people to greatly underestimate how many beavers live somewhere for several reasons.

1) Many foods are not unlike grasses in that they can be cut without looking like it for long. Runs are still identifiable by vegetation missing from their trails.

2) Even so, food is abundant and beavers eat many different foods.

3) Beavers are much less active in high temps, and I don’t blame them.

The fact that there are such living arrangements would suggest full blown colonies here. Multiple breeding pairs plus offspring. That may or may not be the case in other parts of the country. Yes, multiple lodges can be found on well established impoundments, even in South Louisiana. Here, it is not common, but it absolutely happens.

The flat topped older houses are likely being used for feed holes.
They may mud them up in the fall if there is a lot of beaver there.

I've seen beaver go after the roots of yellow lily or spatterdock a lot during the summer. Their roots can get pretty big

I have seen them make crop circles in soybeans this time of year even though they have every species of trees available them.

I have a useless observation for you. I have seen beaver eating salmon. Probably doesn't apply to MICHIGAN.

Three houses are on a 5 acre pond I trapped last year. Between me and a buddy who trapped one corner of it we caught 23. We definitely didn't catch them all.

A lot of our coastal lakes have a fair amount of beaver and you hard pressed to find even one peeled stick. They live off of submerged lilly rhizomes. But find some old dead snag that has fallen into the water and there will be lots of chewing on the dead wood to grind their teeth down.

I just did a nuisance job and couldn't find any peeled sticks, but they chewed the heck out of the guys plastic floating dock and kayak. The pond is covered in lily pads, so I'm guessing that is what they are really feeding on. Took 5 large beaver with my pb 53lbs. Missed one for sure cause I got a toe, but I'm positive there are more.
