Towed my aluminum jon boat about 40 miles to Strathmere NJ to do some clamming this morning with my wife and 14yo son. Got the boat stuck on a sand bar twice at low tide. Some very minor damage to my prop but still usable. My chart is old and the sand bars aren't where they used to be. Raised the outboard and drifted for a few minutes until we were free.

I like using a clam rake. Wife prefers to use her feet to feel the clams. My son was going back and forth between the two. In about 2 hours we came home with 50 or 60 clams 1-1/2" - 2-1/2". Bigger than that and they start getting tough.

Brought up several horseshoe crabs, a couple of oysters, and saw a bunch of blue claw crabs in the shallow water. Wish I had brought along a few crab pots. I will next time.

I did kind of freak out like a little girl when I released a horseshoe crab - to have it climb up my foot to my leg a few seconds later.

Good way to spend a summer morning. Son rated it 8/10 - not bad for a hormonal teenager.

They dig for them in the mudflats up here and it's backbreaking work from what I'm told. I love fried clams.

I like steamed clams and clams on the half shell. I haven't had either one for a number of years now.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

If you had to make a living at it, it would definitely wear you out. But, if you only need enough for dinner, you can get it done in a couple of hours.

Actually counted when I steamed them and ended up with 84 clams.

Sounds like a good time. But being a life long mid westerner, I have no idea what you're talking about!

I couldn’t tell you how many millions of pounds of clams came out of the the Mississippi River. They we’re first used in the button industry and then made a comeback in the cultured pearl industry. No season anymore due to multiple factors.

I've never seen a horseshoe crab in real life, they don't even look like a crab, are they good for anything?

I don't know about for people, but some shorebirds rely on their eggs during their long migrations

Beaches here used to be covered with them. There's a lot less now. They are good for one thing, that I know of. Their blood is used as a test for the presence of bacteria - or something like that. They collect the crabs, send them to a lab where they extract some of the blood, and return the crabs. Oh, their blood is blue, not red. Strange.
