30 km NW of a place called Swan hills.
Reports today say the bear responsible was an adult female with no cubs and was euthanized.
They warn that there are loads of bears roaming in the area and for any people to take precautions.

Interesting that the largest taken Grizzle bear skull in Canada was killed up there in the 1920-30s by a lady trapper with her 22 single shot Cooey taken in self defence. Nothing like a well placed shot when one was needed at 12 feet and closing.

A lot of areas in the far north roads are real scarce and I imagine roads is what you would need to do much hound hunting of bears. I would think it would be tough to do on much scale at all given all the bush.

I wouldnt use dogs to hunt bears here,or anywhere in mushkego country.
There are lots of easier ways to kill bear than chasing them around with dogs thru got knows how much bug infested impenetrable swamp.
Might be ok to use a dog to locate a shot bear that has run away from a poor hit.
It might be OK in Northern Alberta,I dont know if its high ground there or mushkego country.

It is legal to hunt bears with dogs in most provinces of Canada and in Alaska, not sure how much is done where this attack was. I know several guys from around here that have taken their dogs to Alaska and ran bears with them, most were on islands like Prince of Wales with fairly good road systems however. Not sure what there are for locals in Alaska who run hounds, I know there are quite a lot in places in Canada, I have sold a dog that went to an outfitter in Canada.

I don't believe you can legally hunt brown/grizzlies with dogs in Alaska, only blacks. Not sure about Canada, but I know guys run them there some, even if they can't kill them with dogs.

Most of the bear attacks occur in Parks or other areas where the bears aren't hunted, I would be curious how many in the stats posted were in areas open to hunting. This particular one did occur in an area open to hunting, I believe.

And Boco, I won't turn my dogs loose on a wounded bear, I'll run them in some pretty nasty and pretty roadless country (more so without wolves) but turning them on a wounded bear is asking for trouble and a lot of vet bills. Dogs tend to go a little nuts with the smell of blood and a crippled bear.

I meant to find them when they expire.The outfitters here keep dogs to help the rambos find their shot bear.
You wont find a wounded bear in this country where I am unless he has a broken spine and is paralized in the hind end.They dont go far like that and leave a good trail.You dont need a dog to find them but you have to be careful since they go into real thick spruce bush and will circle back around close to their own trail and wait to pounce on you.
