BUTTE, Mont. — On Friday, a 12-year-old boy from Butte was injured by an otter while floating along the Big Hole River.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, two boys were floating on inner tubes about a half mile upstream from the Powerhouse Fishing Access Site when they observed several otters downstream.

FWP says the boys tried to keep their distance from the otters, "but one of the otters approached and attacked one of the boys," a press release said.

Two nearby adults were able to help bring the boys to safety.

The 12-year-old received prompt treatment for minor injuries; the other boy was not injured.

Signs are posted around the area to warn fishers and floaters of possible otter activity.

"While attacks from otters are rare, otters can be protective of their young," said FWP in a press release. "They give birth to their young in April and can later be seen with their young in the water during the summer. They may also be protective of food resources, especially when those resources are scarce."

We have one or two otter attacks almost every year. Maybe ours are different but they are very aggressive around here.

Otters have a very short temper.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Otters are cute, but meaner than a snake in the blind. Remember they are a very big weasel.

I agree and believe they are literally a chainsaw with legs. I am thankful that wolverine aren’t like the otter.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.
