This is good advice, Dave. Do this, and go from there.

Flashing check engine light = worry

constant on or come on/go off not as much to worry about

Local auto parts stores will check code (why light is on) but they will not reset light. But if you want to push a button on their scanner and reset yourself it is no problem

For around $20 you can buy one. Then can look it up yourself on the internet.

Don’t you have junkyards and tools in Iowa? Bet you could get a shade tree mechanic to slap it in for you for $200 and a case of cold ones if you can’t YouTube it and figure out how to do it yourself. If it were me I wouldn’t put $700 into the POS you’re driving, I’d push it off a cliff and spend that $700 to buy a better vechile. Seems like you’re on here twice a month complaining about it, just sell the stupid thing and buy a car that actually works.

When you are filling up and the nossel stops the gas....stop putting more gas in.
There is an over-flow and carbon filter that gets filled with spilt gas as you drive around...there fore the lite comes on because the sensor says not right air mixture

i have a OBDII reader that I plug in to the truck and blue tooth to my phone

they are like 20 dollars https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Product...hy=9018907&hvtargid=pla-405660976208

my 2004 GMC 1500 has an evap system relay that doesn't read fully open or closed from time to time. I bought the truck used from my local tire shop they replaced the relay 2x even tried the new updated relay valve

I drive with the light on now it isn't hurting anything , I clear ait and check to see if any other codes from time to time

the tool is handy and worth the 20 dollars

Can you pass inspection with the light on? Not in all states.

Can u rely on a $20 dollar code scan tool to give u accurate read ? If so, I interested , the one at shop probly at least $150 or more , Bcause if ur going run with check engine lite on, it be nice check out on occasion to see if anything new happen, my tps is on in cold weather as well as air bag sensor or lite on, just hope in future the low fuel lite don't start go on all time on dic

I’d spend $20 on a code scanner and go from there. By the sounds of it this truck is actually indestructible.

Dave I've been running my 02 ranger with the check engine lite on for the last 260,000 miles. Every now and then I lift the hood and check, yup it's still there. laugh

yes it has given the same reads as the shop it is really just a serial data converter the cars computer provides the info and it is just a data output the same connector and same data it gives the expensive scanner

the inexpensive scanners mostly don't have the software to read air bag codes and they tend to be read and clear only , the fancy ones the dealers have can do things like set shift points

definitely worth the 20 dollars to be able to read codes , my 2004 GMC 1500 with the scanner from the link , also can see vacuum levels , acceleration , speed intake manifold temp , radiator temp and a few others.
