Got to the final list of trap cover started late today. Will continue for the next few days until I run out of raw materials. Needed to buy a new torch this year. Boy did they go up on price, no surprise though.

Had to build a new tumbler door closure so I don't get choked out with all the dust like the last batch a year ago.

First batch dumped and cooled ready for the buckets.

Doing 50/50 dirt - peat blend again. Less weight and extends my dry sifted dirt as well.

Two guys could get most if not all of their waxed dirt in a weekend if you had your materials prepped already. Treating is the easy part.

I can do 10 gal at a time however it mixes more thoroughly it seems with 5 -7 gal capacity. The door closure allows more volume and better mixing and no dirt loss..

8-10 oz.powdered wax per gal.is about where I am with my blended mix. I pre mix everything cool before heating to the melting point.

what are your thoughts about mixing pre-waxed dirt with peat separately?

I generally use native ground cover for cages but the waxed dirt/peat should be fine. It wont freeze, smells natural and should be friendly for them to walk upon. The dirt peat mix is a good cover with good texture. Been using it for many years. Throw in a couple of handfulls of leaf litter/pine litter etc. to further blend if needed.

I have used dry sifted peat with waxed dirt many times. I usually bed in dry peat then cover with waxed cover material when conditions warrant that. Now I just pre mix the two then wax them together. I also use short dried grass clippings from a local golf course as a change up cover.

I opted for a hinged door for speed and the hand made bungee with hooks.

I dont know if I would go as far as calling you a slacker just because you are using an electric tumbler.

Y'all fellas got some snazzy doors on those outfits lol. I've mixed quite a bit of mud in those type of mixers for stonework, but never thought of them for traps or dirtwork. Always learn something on here, carry on gents

Getting ready to start mixing early this morning. Still a nice chill in the air for a couple of hours before the 90"s roll in later in the day. Once a fella gets going on a roll I can run a batch every 15 - 20 mins. by myself.

I thought out my door and its function before my design on the mixer. I have been using one of those lazer gizmo temperature meters to check my temps on my dirt and the drum exterior. Works great for not tegetting things too hot and guessing the temps. Also it is handy for reading your cooling temps of the dirt as it is cooling down. High tech gadgets help a guy out . Just shoot various points of the spread dirt and you know where the hot spots are that need more rakeing out.

I built a 4' x 8' box tray that works well for my cooling tray. The plywood cools quickly from batch to batch. I have roller casters on the bottom to help the cooling process since it is suspended about 2" or so from the cool shed floor.

This is my first year using a concrete mixer and I am making my wax dirt this weekend. I was wondering about the door issue. How critical is it?

I use a mixer and found no need for a door. I like it open to monitor the temp of the dirt/sand, and like to add the wax a little at a time so would have it open more than closed anyway.

Think I'm doing a peat/buckwheat/sand mix this year. Might make some more wax sand. I like to wait till about this time of year so I don't risk remelting and turning into a massive clump over the summer as I don't an air conditioned building where I'm allowed to store it over the summer

I pre mix my wax into the dirt while it is still cool. I get good distribution from the start that way. You can see it thru the mix when its cold. The wax sticks to the drum and paddles more if added to the heated dirt.

Sniper, your too rich on wax if it melts back into a clump. I've never had that happen. I think where Bob needs a door is coming from the peat. It is much dustier than regular dirt. I've never run a door on mine either. Been using my mixer for that for prolly over thirty years now!

Might be our dirt is more dusty then other parts of the country. With your gumbo dirt Lee I doubt you can get a speck of dust out of that stuff. LOL

I have been working dry dirt as long as I have trapped since the mid 60's. I have to wear a paper mask when I work with it here or I am hacking for a day or so later. No more, the cover stops 99% of that dust cloud.

I like the thought of mixing wax in when dirt is cold cause I get it sticking to the paddles.
If you go to a farm store and get a bowl used for feeding animals it will fit in those mixers like a cork I guess you’d say, that’s what I use cause my dirt is very dusty to until wax melts in.
