I was at the gun shop & a guy was buying a Heritage Rough Rider .22. He said he participates in cowboy shoots. Apparently they dress up like cowboys and have organized shooting events. He said he belongs to a club in LaCrosse County. I'd never heard of such a formal method of organized shoots. It sounded kinda cool. Anyone participate?

I've never participated, but there are folks that take it very seriously.

it is one of the largest shooting sports organizations , if you have ever wondered why they make so many SAA guns and coach guns , they have manufacturers trying to get their business by making guns that are CAS competition legal.

Don't get out much do you? You really should. Cowboy action shooting has been around for quite a while and is a hoot. I'm not a participant but have a friend that is involved.

My brother in law is into it big time and is really good at it. AJE, he shoots at LaCrosse quite often.
He has quite a collection of single action revolvers, lever action rifles and a couple shotguns.
Folks get all dressed up in western garb, kind of like playing cowboys and Indians for adults.

I've done it several times. It's pretty easy to get carried away with it, but I had a ton of fun. Pretty satisfying, hearing that steel ring. Y'all are right, folks that are in it, are REALLY in it

Friend of mine was on the circuit….45 colt revolvers loaded with blanks or something….so that when on a horse ,going through the course, balloons were shot at very close distance ..and popped,resulting in a score. Fun to watch ! Round here ,they show up at the county fairs too

I’ve been thinking of getting involved. Looks like a lot of fun and camaraderie. Local shooting range here out in the sage brush desert has western facade buildings setup for their shoots.

they use a coarse black powder blank like a 1Fg or cannon the powder granules have enough speed and heat that they pop the balloon but are not a danger to the crowd in the stands they are doing this in a rodeo stadium or similar

I have a 16-year-old daughter that does cowboy mounted shooting. I haul her and her horse all over the place. I like to say that when your 16-year-old daughter's passion is shooting guns off horses at a dead run, you do whatever it takes to support that passion, Lol. There are worse things out there a 16-year-old could be interested in, aren't there?
