Years back a type of bug got into cypress and killed them but it made beautiful lumber. They got the bugs killed off and the wood isnt available anymore . This was in a restaurant in Lakeland Florida. [Linked Image]

That is "Pecky Cypress". The voids are caused by a fungus. The pecky cypress lumber is now prized as ornamental lumber. The cypress holds up well to moisture and many of the old homes, barns, etc. were built with it. Termites don't like it.

Pecky Cypress

Still available in small quantities and at a premium. Mainly because all the stuff old enough to get that way has been cut. Most cypress today is white young second and third growth. The old red cypress is hard to come by.
