Is the 4.3 v6 a decent motor? Says its gets 285 hp. Enough for what I need. Or, is the 5.3 better for longevity. Looking at 2014 to 2016 models. Want to get at least 12 years out of it.

Even though my son had some major issues with his 5.3, I think its generally a bullet proof motor. I need a 3/4 ton and have talked to a lot of guys with the 6.0 liter engine that have gotten over 300k trouble free miles.

After owning several and working on GM vehicles I have found most of them to be poor quality. That said the 4.3 engine in the vehicle years you speak of is probably one of the better choices. If maintained well, it should serve you well with few troubles.

I have a 5.3 with 130000 miles on her. No problems other than AC compressor that cost me $1700

I’ve had 2 5.3 GMs and they were both a pile of hot garbage. I’ll never own one again.

5.3 with 95K on it here. Oil changes and air filters, keep the maintenance up and should go forever.

v6 loves gas for what it is. If towing V-8 no brainer

Depends on what you needs are really. I had a 99 first year they came out, put 243,000 on it and sold it to my neighbor. Got an 07 "classic now that's got 238,000 on it and goin strong, drive it every day. I got a 3/4 ton deisle for serious chores but I like running around I. The half ton, better ride. Had work truck with that 4.3 in it and I liked it. I wouldn't get silly pulling with it but great driving and riding truck

I would opt for the 5.3. I have had them in 3 trucks now, traded the first two at over 250K and my third (2018) is at 110K with no issues. I get 21 mpg day to day driving.

I've got a 2015 half ton with the 4.3. Only 65000, no issues yet. Gets 20.5mpg with all terrain tires. Its a plain Jane work truck. 6 speed auto is a bit shifty. It does like gas when towing, but I knew that and I tow very little.

Have one in my '01 S-10, very zippy, excellent engine.

I've had the 4.3 , put 182,000 on it before I sold it . No issues

Next up was the 4.8 v8 in a van 120,000 still going strong

My 2016 work truck has the 5.3 109, 000 no issues other than the crappy ac condenser ( due to a crappy robotic weld )

I've heard guys getting close to 300,000 on all these motors

The 5.3 is GM's flagship motor with millions on the road , I wouldn't hesitate to buy another

Stay away from 2011-2014. Theres a major class action lawsuit against GM for faulty piston rings that burn and blow up motors. I have a 2011 suburban that burns 3-4 quarts before 3000 mile oil change.

I just bought a 2021 GMC 1500 Elevation. It has the 5.3L -- 8 speed auto. So far I'm not far from 20mpg. Its only got 400 miles.

A friend of mine has a 2004 1/2 ton chevy with the 5.3l and 125,000 miles. Doesn't use oil and still very peppy.

My son has a 2013 Yukon with 5.3 auto. and 135,000 miles. He pulss a 5 place snowmobile trailer and it does it easily.

So all these bad 5.3l engine reports must be from Ford and Dodge lovers! grin

I was raised a GM guy, my dad drove nothing but GM my whole life. Then I grew up and after throwing tens of thousands of dollars in repairs into my gms I bought a dodge and never regretted it. Absolutely nothing but problems from any GM I ever owned. Maybe I just had bad luck.

Same here Nessy, No Ford or Chrysler products for me but not for reasons you may think.... I have a Dad and 2 uncles on GM pensions, got to support the home team and I've never had any major issues with GM products.. sorry about your bad luck Bob..
