Finished tanning a few more skins last couple days. Still got 3 mink an otter,2 fox and a beaver in the pipeline. And a bunch more in the freezer to do until I get bored with it,or until nuisance beaver picks up in sept.

I sand the leather with corn starch to cut off the bloom-makes them look white.

The look much more softer than mine. The only way I can get beaver sort of soft is to break them over an old 7 1/4 inch plywood blade held in a vise. And I attack them with that = sort of decent results so far. But I keep on trying. Oh I did some mink this past winter and they did trun out nice and they were easy to do, I was surprised about that. How do you thin your hides, I am not going to buy a machine......jk

I use a spokeshave to thin the leather on the beaver around the cheeks and shoulders. Beaver are the hardest to do,because of all the shaving to thin the leather.I ship big beaver to the tannery,I do smaller beavers since they are not much shaving needed.

I've tried to tan a few pelts and not one turned out even usable. Your work there is amazing Boco!
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Dont give up,trapsetter,It takes a while to figure it out. I had a lot of fails when starting out and still the odd pelt doesnt come out as planned. There are a bunch of steps involved where a mistake at any stage will affect the finished product.

Boco, I wish you would do a video or a write up to teach us how to do that. They don't get any better than that. X2, and they do look great.
