On small seedlings just don't J root them when you stick them in the slot. Better to prune the root than stick them in the slot and bend the root. X2. And don't leave any air pockets.

With all the tree diseases nowadays, I try hard for tree diversity on my property. That's my school of thought too. I have a bunch of different acorns in pots..red, white, bur, and chestnut oaks. They won't go in the ground until the fall or next spring.

My grandfather had a rule when planting trees. “10 dollar tree, 100 dollar hole” I've heard the same thing from an arborist. Good advice. I think my dad must have been older than your grandpa. His speil was a $1 tree and a $10 hole.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

You cant plant pecans in the ground from seed ? Done tried that then found the nuts are bleached and heated to remove moisture.

I just uncovered the two Japanese Maple I planted last spring. They are tiny, maybe 2” high. They had buds going under the burlap coverings I put over them for the winter. Also planted two more of the JM this morning. Our golden chain, cherry, and apple trees are pushing buds out too. I like the maples as we do not get much fall color here aside from the cottonwoods.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

We need easy to grow here. The golden chain tree was confused with the calendar it seemed. It’s first year it blossomed nicely, the second through sixth it would not blossom until August and then enter winter full of leaves. It seems to have gotten it together this year finally. It was planted in the early spring.

Sorry 330 didn’t see your question until now. Well explained above. The 100 dollar hole is very important. If I plant a tree with a root mass the size of a coffee can I dig a hole the size of a oil drum. Also if it’s from a nursery in a planter I take a carpenter knife and cut the roots top to bottom in 3-4 spots. I also always add water with a root stimulant to the bottom of the hole.
Everything the left touches it destroys

I do that and other forestry work and wildlife habitat work for a living.
A lousy tree will live and may even thrive if planted well. A good tree will die if planted poorly. The wise approach is to get good trees and plant them well.
If you are over the age of 10, get large trees of the variety that you want. Customers always want to cheap out on trees. These are guys in their mid 60s or older wanting to plant apple tree whips. Planting whips they will need to be very fortunate to see much fruit. They usually wise up when I ask them if they will live long enough to see the trees bear fruit.

You cant plant pecans in the ground from seed ? You can but like fruit trees the best cultivars are grafted. Seedling pecans from seed are a crap shoot on nut quality. Almost always smaller nuts not the nice large nuts you want.

I have always planted in the spring. I have planted 1,000's of pine, cedar, spruce apples and plums over the years on my piece of dirt. The cedar and the fruit trees need to be fenced to keep the deer off them.
I have nothing clever to put here.
