It'll be great until a school bus load of kids gets smeared by one... Like the self driving car that killed the pedestrian in Tempe, AZ a few years back.
Or some hacker will hack the network and everything in the country will get shipped to Cleveland.

I dont think it will work at all for what i do. Maybe if a machine can be built that really can think. I suspect that is still a ways off. I doubt it will be practical for hauling much of anything till that happens.

I agree its a ways in the future but at the same time lots of yesterday's impossible things are for sale cheap today.

Was told they will still need drivers to drive them from the pick up to the interstate, then from the interstate to the delivery point. I also understand that they might build a separate interstate just for trucks since they get max mileage at 45 mph. Probably best not to share the roads with slow moving big rigs. Way too many hurtles to jump before it's part of the norm.

Self driving cars will only work if all vehicles are self driving, and if nobody (kids, pedestrians, etc) is allowed near the streets. If they can all talk to each other, they could go 100mph within inches of each other and be perfectly safe, with each vehicle knowing exactly where every other vehicle was, and what it was going to do. Stop signs and traffic lights could be eliminated, cara could cruise right through intersections at high speed, and adjust for any other vehicle. But, as long as there's the human factor, it'll never happen.

When these autonomous big rigs are on the road, British Columbia will not have the only, “ the Highway thru He_ _.”

I think its still a long way from becoming mainstream

When I first started driving 40 years ago there was talk of a driverless rig that could follow a driven rig. I haven’t seen any of them in practice.

My neighbor is one of the guys sitting behind the wheel of one of the self drivers. An engineer is in the passenger seat. They drive them 8 hrs a day testing them.

I can see where they could eliminate the OTR part of driving but drivers will be needed to pick them up and complete the local piece of the delivery.
I have thought The big companies and onboard computers would have linked loads for trailer transfers to keep drivers at home more but I guess not.
