I got my copy of the Wyoming G&F Regs for antelope, deer, and elk a couple of days ago. Reading through it tonight, under the Terms and Definitions section, I saw that the jackrabbit is listed as a "predatory animal" along with coyote, porcupine, raccoon, fox, skunk, and stray cat. This was certainly a surprise to me but it is no error, it is consistent with the referenced Wy statute. OK western guys, why would the jackrabbit be considered a predatory animal?

Just covering the vermin ranking I would guess. That’s how we list the same critters as vermin.

Its not. Its just listed that way as its a nuisance animal and the state has no license requirements or seasons or limits on animals on that list.

I see a few Jack booms now and then but you see them more in the breeding season, then they run down the road in front of a guy they are not very bright. Only see a few most years but tracks all over in some fields so they are out there~

Based on the Black-tailed Jacks that nearly ate Idaho in the winter of 1981-82, I'd say "predacious" isn't far off. I saw them eat entire haystacks to the ground......massive stacks of bales reduced to a pile of pizzy, shat smeared rubble in just a month or so. It is hard to describe how thick they were in the Mud Lake, Lewisville/Menan area of the Snake River plains. I had days when I saw literally thousands of them many times over. I'd love taking my grandsons out there hunting if they ever get like that agian.

I was taught in FFA that 7 jackrabbits eat as much foliage as a cow. The first time they eat the material goes straight through them with enzymes added. This begins the digestive process. Then after a while the jack eats the pellets a second time to complete the digestive process. They always eat more than they need on the predigest side. Very bizarre dietary habits. Predation on hay is a thing. As are trees and porkies.

Maybe lawmakers in Wyoming just ain’t too bright. Jackrabbits are a lot of nasty things but predator ain’t one of em. Fun to spotlight on the backroads though. Tons of em out here
