It is a symptom of a disease. Without knowing what kind of tree or seeing more, I would guess it is a fungal disease such as cytospora canker.

Looks like Red Oak, not sure what the Grey is, I would assume some type of fungus.

who-ever the tree climber was had some good sized spikes
@9 o'clock you can see some fungal growth
@1;30 you can see a bark bruise and regrowth
with black stain there is some iron somewhere in that wood

Who photo-cropped out the 20 year old bikini clad girl wood splitter ?
