looks like a cider press

this is likely a demonstration of how it worked

imagine all that wood clean and strong , the box that fits together with wedges is where you put the mash , the tray below has slots to allow the cider to flow out and a spot at the front to collect it

everything gets washed down with boiling water from pails heated the box is set in place and filled with ground up apple there is a top board under that cribbing you can't see that just fits inside the mash box , then you start cribbing up to the big beam then a few guys hang on the big beam morticed into that tree , cider flows from the mash box , lift add cribbing , press, cider flows

I would guess that probably takes around 6-8 bushel of apples ground to fill that and you might get about 2-3 gallons of juice per bushel

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

We just made a little over a gallon and a half of apple cider on Friday, out of 5 gallons of windfall apples I picked up in the front yard. I pasteurized the cider, since they were ground apples. I have a fruit press and 2 sausage presses, but I used a juicer. It was very easy. It only took around 20 minutes.

I like knowing the old methods and appreciate the new ones.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

It's a Breville Juice Fountain Multi-Speed BGE510XL. I bought it a few years ago new. A friend of mine had one. I saw how well it worked and bought mine the next day. The pulp comes out really dry. It will juice apples as fast as you can feed half apples or whole small apples in.

Thanks. I'd toyed with the idea of a cider mill before, but this sounds like it would better fit my needs. Now if my apple trees just ever start producing.

You're welcome.

The first couple of years after we moved here, I put in 20 some apple trees and all the different varieties that were available at the end of the season, when the trees were discounted. About half are loaded, where I am going to have to start picking apples to keep the branches from breaking. The other half have 0 to a handful of apples.

A lot of people have apple trees and never use any of them because they think they are buggy. Often they will let you have them if you ask. We got a few hundred pounds of apples that way, a few years ago. It may be worth looking for unpicked trees near you.

We have some wild apple trees on our farm, mostly on the steep banks of our springs. They are loaded most years. Unfortunately the squirrels and deer obliterate them as soon as they get sweet. They are very hard to pick because of the slopes and height too. The Johhny Appleseed Museum is only 14.5 miles from my farm. John Chapman planted and gave away large numbers of apple seedlings in my area. I wonder if my wild apple trees are out of some of the trees he grew.

Cider tastes the best when we use a lot of different types of apples.

At the Amish produce auctions, you can buy large numbers of nearly perfect looking apples for cheap when most of the crop is coming in. You can buy cider, blemished or deer apples for next to nothing, in those big cardboard rings, on a pallet, when the crop is coming in heavy. If you have any produce auctions in your area, they're probably worth checking out.

We make about 200 gallons of cider each year, using a 100 year old screw type press. Most modern presses built for the home market do the same.

A "modern" version of the lever press uses a hydraulic jack in place of that long lever. Yet another alternative is a bladder press. Wine guys probably know about those.

And I 'agree.......would hate to be the guy running that lever. Can only hope business end was held in place by some kind of block and tackle.

Most states have a list online showing when various crops, including fruit, are coming into produce auctions and farmers market. They also tell when the normal peak is for that produce. During the peak, prices are extremely low because of all the competition to sell. It's a great time to buy peak flavor, very cheap produce.

Here's Ohio's list.

Typical Vegetable and Fruit Harvest Dates in Ohio
VEGETABLES Early Most Active Late
Asparagus April 23 May 1 - May 30 June 25
Broccoli June 20 July 1 - October 31 November 30
Cabbage June 1 June 10 - October 31 November 15
Cauliflower September 1 Oct. 5 - November 20 December . 5
Collards May 15 August 20 - October 31 November 20
Cucumbers June 25 July 5 - August 15 September 15
Eggplant July 10 July 20 - September 30 October 15
Lima Beans July 10 July 15 - August 31 October 31
Okra July 15 August 15 - September 15 October 15
Onions June 25 June 25 - July 31 September 30

Squash June 15 June 25 - September 1 September 30
Spinach April 15 May 5 - June 25 June 30
Sweet Corn July 1 July 5 - August 31 September 25
Tomatoes July 5 July 10 - September 15 October 15
FRUITS Early Most Active Late
Apples July 15 September 1 - October 25 October 31
Blackberries July 10 July 15 - July 30 August 10
Blueberries June 15 July 5 - August 10 August 31
Cherries June 10 June 20 - July 25 July 25
Grapes August 25 September 10 - September 20 September 30
Peaches, Nectarines July 5 July 20 - September 1 September 15
Plums July 1 August 1 - September 30 October 15
Pears August 1 August 10 - August 31 September 10
Raspberries July 1 July 15 - August 15 September 20
Strawberries May 20 June 1 - June 10 June 25
OTHER Early Most Active Late
Flowers, Herbs July 1 July 15 - September 15 October 1

This interactive map gives a pretty good idea when the different produce, including apples, is available in your state. It also shows the peak dates

Here's the second batch of apple cider for the year, minus some we refrigerated for immediate consumption. This was canned for storage.

I'll make more apple and some pear cider this evening, hopefully after it cools down some.
