Beaver problem but when I checked it out there was a lot of old damage but very little new sign/damage.

Sometimes in summer beaver are not as active, still there, but don't do much cutting. If there is any new mud on a dam, you're set. Sometimes I will get calls about beaver and find a washed out dam, no beaver, but that's why they call us because they don't know animals. When I go in to a spot that looks sort of dead in summer I treat it like it is active and usually catch beaver. Can remember seeing a spot that looked pretty quiet many years ago. Told the land owner perhaps a pair. Caught 10. You do get some surprises.

I walked a small creek last Sunday that sounds just like that. I was kind of doubting whether there were any beaver in this creek but figured I’d keep looking. I got halfway to the second bridge (about 200 yards) and finally found this.

Just a few yards away on the other bank I got a pretty good whiff of castor. I didn’t see any mounds and couldn’t tell exactly where the smell was coming from.

Good luck.

Aren't yearlings starting to disperse?

Based on the size loops I left, I’m hoping so.

I was thinking perhaps someone had trapped previously and had one they couldn’t get. I also thought maybe a young one dispersed moving in. I hung some snares, a couple small loops and a couple about 12”. Caught a large female showing signs of nursing.

What kind of sets did you make with the snares?

No cutting here this time of year
They are eating vegetation
No mud on den is not a indicator here either

I like to look early in the morning before the crawl out dry
Also look by a dam for pop in the water if clear
Look at water plant to see if they are eatn
