I suggest Valdez, Alaska. Switzerland calls itself the Valdez of Europe. It’s really a beautiful place, with lots of mountains and bays. Lots of wildlife to see, whales, bears, orcas, sea otters, etc. fishing is best in late July. Top charterboats in my opinion are Valdez Outfitters, Dan Orion, Halibut Grove. Long ride out to fishing grounds but big halibut, ling cod, and various rockfish. My son’s family and mine both have boats moored there and have been going for forty years. It holds a special place in my family’s heart.

This. Get off the over-beaten path to Homer.

The thing is the limits. If you are good with one to two a day per person then its for you. Most of the time the charters catch chicken halibut. They typically weight less than 20 lbs. Check with you charter and see what poundage they typically catch. I would not go out of Homer.

There are still alot of boats out of Homer that really fish. There are also alot that only make chicken runs. Do your research and you can have a quality trip.

You should also look at Kodiak. Less pressure, close to deep water.

I agree with this advice. Rich fishing grounds and a small charter fleet

Hooked this one in Cook Inlet in 30' of water with a 12 oz weight. The tide was coming in strong and the thing took off on a run like a 85 lb king. Brought him back aways and he took off again on a shorter run. Finally got a gaff in it and end of story. I needed one more fish for the freezer but would have preferred a smaller one, 15-35 pound halibut are good eats.

Check the federal regulations. The charter limit for cook limit is now 1 and a baby under 10 lbs. PWS may still be 2.
