What are you planting, what do you like? It痴 getting to be that time of the year....

I like Whitetail Institute No Plow a lot. I prepare the soil, almost like a garden, but I like the no plow mix. Brassicas, clover, rye. It痴 a good mix, but I知 wondering what others are planting and like.

Are you planting prepared commercial blends, or are you planting something else?

I just go sit on a deer trail and wait for one to walk by. Guess I'm old fashioned, lol.

Plant Grandpa Rays and Elk Mound Seed on our plots about 38 acres total in plots. Brasicas, Corn, Beans, and we have switched to a lot of clover for early green up source and year round food supply.

Whitetail Institutes Pure Attraction is a good mix, I have planted lots of it in the last 5 years. Our local southern states makes a mix that痴 very similar, I知 trying it this year.

I have several plots of latino clover which the deer eat but I think there are better things. I am going to try some chicory in one this year. A guy I know swears by it says deer will walk through a wheat or corn field to get to it.

3.5 acres of soybeans efenced that I will sow winter rye in when the soybeans leaves turn. I have another 3 acres planted in strips. Three kinds of clover, kale, rape, turnips, daikon radishes, chicory, sugar beets and iron clay peas. This year my goal is to give them alot of greens and to learn which they prefer and I can scale back next year.

When I moved to Va 4 years ago in Jan/Feb/Mar my deer were poor as rakes. Most does were not healthy enough to have one fawn. This spring, after planting for 3 years, I have one doe with 4 fawns, another with 3, and most others have twins. Some first timers only have one, but that is to be expected. The does now are fat as pigs which means the food source is working. Its really nice to see the results, especially on your own piece of dirt.

Last year I experimented with daikon radishes and chicory. They ate the chicory to the ground then the radishes and switched over to soybeans and clover. Chicory is a perrenial so it comes back every year. I love planting for the deer almost as much as hunting them. I can't plant corn or sorghum because the bears tear it up.

I have winter rye red winter wheat survivor winter peas ground hog radish and purple top turnips. I have not bought big name brands for a few years. I bought 162 lbs of seed and inoculant for the peas for 103$ this year. Welter seed and honey company Onslow IA is where I buy all my seed. The cost difference is unreal. An example 56lbs winter rye 13.75$ 50lbs survivor peas 42$.I live 12 miles away but they ship anywhere and have good deals on shipping in the spring.

No new planting this year, to dry. Old plots still have some clover coming.
