I think there'd be stretches where recycle places would be a LONG walk apart.

$.05 deposit here, you'd likely make lunch money in less than 2 miles.

A fishing pole and you should be able to find some brim in just about any creek along the way

Here you could take a large trash can full of “cans” in and you might get enough for a cup of coffee.

I've thought about that a time or two. If you have a tent, sleeping bag, food etc. that's a load without the cans. you could smash the cans to cut down on volume, some places don't want them smashed. So you are going to need a truck that you would have to leave at the side of the road and go down and came back up on the other side. So I decided to factor the wife into the situation and that was where I met strong resistance. Oh well it was a thought.
How many cans = 1 coon hide.

Might be able to find enough roadkill you wouldn't have to worry about collecting cans for food money.

Our ditches up here are pretty clean as far as aluminum cans go. Might consider pulling a small wagon to help out with some of those honey holes.

Just remember that not every scrap yard buys aluminum cans.

I sold 10 garbage bags full of mostly smashed cans yesterday got 44 dollars. You better plan on eating beans.

Clearly you need to take them to a redemption center and not a scrap yard. May be tough to carry them all across a state to another one with a can deposit.

He said walk across the US the answer is a resounding no. There are multiple hundred mile stretches in the US that have very few cans per mile and zero redemption centers. Now if he was talking about the BIG MUDDY East to the coast maybe. Its been over twenty years since I was in that part of the country probably still just as much trash as ever if not more.

Michigan is a good bet. We have a $ .10 deposit here on all carbonated beverages. You could make a full time living walking Michigan alone.. People throw them out all over the roads. There is a fellow that lives by me, just telling me the other day that he has already returned 20,000 bottles and cans this summer. He's a little touched so he doesn't travel far. With a large range he would make much more.

There was an old Seinfeld episode where Newman was filling his mail car with cans from NY to bring them to Mi to return them. Pretty funny.
