Last year was my first year trapping and I didn't put up any fur. The few coons, possom, and skunks that I caught I skinned and then sent out for tanning. This year I am expanding my line and I need to put up the fur because: a) I don't need many more tanned furs, b) getting everything tanned will get expensive, c) with prices so low my buyer won't pay anything for fur green furs that aren't put up because it costs him more to put them up than they are worth.

How many stretchers should I buy and what size? Also, will one fleshing beam cut it, or do I need multiple sizes?

I plan on setting about 12-15 locations for coon, mink, and fox and skunk if I happen to catch any.

I live in central Susquehanna Valley. I can help you out (lend boards) if you live nearby. PM me.

I started out with 6 coon and 6 coyote boards. I am setting about 75 coyote sets this year. Coon are not what I am going after but easy to skin and put up. After last year I will be adding to my coyote boards.

One fleshing beam for larger animals and a mink/muskrat fleshing beam

A couple of boards per species, large and small. A fleshing beam is not needed for mink and muskrat as they are easily fleshed on their forming boards.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

My thought on this would be... 1/2 dozen coon boards and 1/2 dozen fox boards, variety of sizes. The coon and fox boards can be put into service as possum and skunk boards also. A 6" beam can handle everything. As for mink, 2 male and 2 female mink boards. As bctomcat said, mink can be easily fleshed on the forming board.

If you have access to a freezer you could cut the number of boards in half if you wanted to get by on the cheap.

Keep an eye out for a small scrap piece of rigid insulation, comes in handy for the push pins!

Best of luck to you this upcoming season!

Let's go Brandon!
